I have a IH 544 utility gas, with Hydro trans. It dont run yet so I have a trans question. This tractor has 2 shift levers. One on the rh side seems to be a hi-lo the one on the left is for the Hydro, but has 2 side by side slots. Is one slot for forward the other for reverse? Or is it a dual range? Or just how do these work?

I saw this on a 656 once. Somebody cut a second slot for reverse so they could just pull straight back on the lever instead of moving it to the left first. I also have a 544 hydro.

hi benny, I have the same tractor. The shift on the right is high- neutral- and low. and the shift on the left is indeed forward and reverse. the further up you go on forward the faster the tractor goes, and the further down you go on reverse the faster the tractor goes,, in the middle is neutral. I love thsi tractor, makes a great raking tractor, does yours have pTO and 3 point hitch?

mine came from the stae, it was a mowing machine, so its bareback, that is teh only drawback. good luck, pat

Does your left shifter have 2 slots? Like an H with a middle slot to go from one side to the other? If so why is there 2 slots?

I have remotes, 3 pt Lift and 2 speed PTO, Full power steering no mechanical connection. Has a short radius turning front axle (swept back) From what I can tell this tractor is a 1968. Is a IH not a Farmall.
