Has anyone been able to get the Zenith "replacement" for older Cubs to work satisfactorily? I talked to others who have used this carb and they are having the same problem I am having. The engine is nearly impossible to start, but when it starts, it runs very well. It idles well, and is very good at high speed without smoke at any speed. But, in order to start it I must hold my hand over the air intake, but even then it takes too long to start. Any ideas?

Yes, mine wants a lot of choke until it's warmed up. Also lacking a little power at high RPMs but some of that may just be old age. Jim

Can't say as I'm having that problem with mine. It does take a little feathering of the choke to get it to pop off initially, and it likes about half choke for the first 60 seconds or so, but it's not "impossible" to start. If you get right on the choke as you start cranking, it fires within 2 seconds.

Haven't done anything to mine really except play with the needles, and that didn't affect how it starts. It's always started the same right from the get-go.

Do you have a functional choke? It's perfectly normal for a gas engine to require some choke to get it running, more as it gets colder.

Thanks. The carburetor has just been rebuilt with a new kit by a very experienced person who rebuilds mostly Zenith carburetors for Model A Ford cars. The choke is ineffective for starting although it is fully closing except for the little spring loaded valve in the choke plate.

Temporarily put a piece of tape on the little valve and see what happens. Also make sure the choke plate is centered in the bore, They can get crooked. JimN
