A/SA Hydraulic guys, what is this?

Working on grading the driveway yesterday on my 140, for about an hour and a half, and I went to use down pressure on the rear blade. BOOOM!!! SPLASH!!!!! ! SMOKE!!!!!

Hytrans came shooting out of the touch control unit at hyper velocity, blew all over the front of the tractor, and after shutting it off and hopping down, I found a 2 inch steel disc, hotter than anything and covered with fluid on the ground. What a mess.

Well, obviously I couldn't lift the blade so I took it off. The Rockshafts would cycle up and down with no weight. So, some basics. I've been having problems with the unit dropping the attachment on it's own, and with fluid getting hot. I'm thinking the touch control unit was overfilled causing the heat and over pressure. I get that I'm going to have to take the gas tank off and sundry other things to get to the front of the touch control unit, but my question is: What is that 2 inch steel disc (looks kind of like an engine freeze plug only without the flanges) and where does it go?? Any help? Thanks.

Dave: That is better, you had me worried for a bit. What I actually like to do is go through one forward and back stroke of both hydraulic levers with fill plug out and engine running. It will dispurse any excess oil, plus allow any air that may be in the system to escape. 4 or 5 strokes of the levers can't hurt either.

See, my book didn't cover the position of the arms when filling, it just give the fill point and the capacity. Which if I had drained it first, would have been useful when re-filling. Arms full forward, got it. once I get a plug in that hole, I'll know better. Thanks.

No chance of using the old one eh? And I assume by what you said that you install one with the concave hump pointing out, so that the punch will work to expand it without completely "flattening" it. Thanks alot, I'll get into tear down mode in the next few days. I'm glad you cleared that up, I was hoping that the plug was a failsafe device. I feel better knowing that it is. Thanks again. Oh, and where did you get the new one??

Dave: If you think your over filling the hydraulic unit, and it sounds as though you are. Remember your supposed to fill the reservoir to the bottom of the fill hole, with both rockshafts in rear position. With them forward you get it too full, and there is no place for surplus oil to go.

It is exactly what you described. Same thing as a freeze plug. They are for over pressure protection of touch control system. The hydraulic system is a closed system, ie no vent. If you overfill the unit it has no place to expand when the fluid heats up, like it did in your case. The part number is 172592 and is a 2" expansion plug. I got mine from my local Case/IH dealer. It cost more to have it shipped to me than the plug costs. You install it just like a freeze plug. Put it in the hole and then drive it into the hole with a large punch. It is concaved so as you drive it in and it expands.
