i was test driving 340 ih today, and smelled something hot, looked for source and found it to be left rear brake must have locked up , cause that brake housing was hot to touch. i creeped back to shop, i did not take housing bolts out yet. i did replace the brakes and three round steel balls that go into assembly, i adjusted brakes a few days ago all seem to work ok. what could cause brakes to freeze up like that . and what should i do & look for. could any other problems come of this situation with the brake locking up. thanks Jim

THe three return springs on the perimeter of the plates can be weak. The adjustment could be too tight, the ball tracks can have dents in them locking the balls, and the friction material can be too grippy causing self application. Backing up 2 feet releases locked brakes. I would check the ramps and springs first. This type of brake is not the finest setup in the world. But live with it we must for now. JimN

I JUST GOT BACK IN FROM SHOP, I REMOVED THE BRAKES AND WOW, THEY ARE WORE , LOTS OF BRAKE DUST INSIDE COVER, ALSO I NOTICED THAT THE SHAFT LOOKS A BIT WORE WHERE BRAKES SIT, BRAKES HAD WEAR MARKS ON STEEL TEETH ALSO, THE ACCUATING ASSEMBLY LOOKS OK, IM NOT SURE WHATS CAUSING THIS, I PUT THREE NEW BALLS IN, NEW SPRINGS, AND NEW BRAKES, HOWEVER THE FACE THAT THE BRAKES BUTT UP TO ARE VERY PITTED AND NOT SMOOTH,COULD THIS CAUSE THAT , WHERE WOULD I FIND PARTS TO FIX THIS KIND OF ISSUE, THANKS,jIM

You may try taking the housing (outer) and the bearing cage retainer (inner) to a good brake shop that can turn down the rough surfaces and get them smooth for you. I had to do that on my rowcrop 340D.
