Just had an old friend of mine over that is an "authority" on old Farmalls. He is 75 years old, had 65 restored tractors all IH. He heard my A run and said that it is just not right... he said that it gets way too hot, seems like its struggeling to run and seems like it is one tooth off on the mag timing. We tore into it and it does run much easier, seems less "tight" and doesn't get hot. The timing was off more than one tooth. He fixed it and now it sounds correct and runs cool. I have no idea about this tractors history, previous owners must have had it really messed up. I never took that apart, When I got this tractor I sandblasted, did necessary repairs and didn't go looking for problems. It sounds like it should all the way around however now it smokes a little..... any ideas why and if it may stop smoking, Also, what may be going on to cause this smoking.

when you said the engine labored and ran hot before the distributor was reset, i'd take an educated guess and say the ignition timing was way retarded. this will cause a high cylinder temperature and a high exhaust temperature. i would take a good look at the valves, they prolly got overheated and its leaking oil down past the valve guides. may be just needs seals. it smokes now because the lower cylinder temp is not burning all the oil and you are getting smoke. run a compression test dry on all the cyinders, spark plugs out, throttle wide open. write the numbers down. squirt a couple pumps of oil from an oil can in each cylinder and retest. if the compression comes up 20-30 more pounds, your rings are worn, if not, its the valves.

It might stop smoking if the rings are stuck and they come loose. More likely the rings are worn or you need to have the head freshened (valve job). I don't want to make you feel bad, but you should get your machine running good before you blast and paint. "Spray and Pray" restorations usually don't make for happy tractor owners. Glad to hear you got it running better. mike durhan
