fyi. make sure you have a ihc thermostat. they have double use. when cold they heat up the block. when the motor is hot, they close off the block and push through the rad to cool. if this helps. i have seen this happen.

Look for bubbles in your radiator. Allan may have found the problem. Hal

I don't know so I'll ask - what is normal operating temp for a 282 diesel? 210-220 doesn't sound hot enough to be causing the problem you are seeing.

180° and it just about takes a court order to warm 'em up in the wintertime.

Don't assume that the new thermostat is good. My brother got a new stat from NAPA & it was bad--his pickup behaved just like you are saying. He also has a 4010 gas which he changed out the coolant one time & had all kinds of trouble--belching coolant out the filler-lots of stuff. Finally changed the coolant back out & used distilled water with the anti-freeze---no more problems. Your stat is in the correct way, isn't it? I guess I'd go with the pump impeller being loose on the shaft if the stat checks out.

You've got a 282 and an electric fan. That tells me you've made some modifications. What else have you done? Turned it up some? These engines like to blow head gaskets when pushed too hard. Check the water pump like Hal said, make sure thermostat is installed correctly.

If the belt is tight your pump may be the problem.
Touch the bottom hose and see if it's cooler when the temp is up. It may be the impeller. When the engine is cold look in radiator when the engine is at an idle and see if the coolant is moving. Hal

Maybe the engine timing is off some?

Red:
Not sure what the temp should be for the coolant, but possibly you have the radiator over-filled. The radiator needs some of the head room for expansion when hot.
On my 340 I can just barely touch coolant on the end of my index finger when cold.
