i recently bought a 1962 504g with a wide front end.
broke a spindle and find out now they are rare as hens teeth to find. As i understand it ih used outside vendors to make these (shwartz,...shultz? maybe. at any rate i've got a local guy turning and welding one to specs.but its taken forever, has anyone else had this problem?- any sources for the right spindle?- should i change out the front end?

Are you sure it isn't aftermarket to start with. Many tricycle fronts have been changed out over the years. Used to be about every farm type catalog you opened would have wide fronts listed.

Part # 371429R91 at any CaseIH dealer in the world.

What's supposed to be so rare about 'em?

i've been told that IH had some wide front ends built by at least two different companies as well as producing their own, (please feel free to set the record straight if you know differently)- so it's not a IH part.- in fact both spindles on this tractor look to have been repaired already.- sounds strange i know.

Your tractor might indeed have an aftermarket front end. No, IH didn't put it on there, someone else did somewhere along the line.

Now, it's just a matter of finding out what make you have so that you can get the needed parts.
