What is the best type of oil to run in my M? I took the oil pan off and cleaned it out so detergent oil shouldn't hurt it. I am planning on running it for a while and then changing it before it's due to get it really clean. The pan had a little water and a bunch of sludge in it. After i get it clean I am going to use mobil 1 synthetic.

I'm also a 15W40 guy, but as time has passed I have went to house brands on the tractors that only run a few hours a year and arent expected to work for a living. These tractors end up getting their oil changes based upon months or years elapsed rather than hours running. Its my humble opinion that oil tecnology has improved so much that they are still getting better oil than they did when they were new.

Any proper weight detergent oil. You are wasting your money on synthetic. I, like several on this forum, use 15W-40. You should also pull the valve cover and the plate on the right side of the engine and clean those areas also.

I have used Mobil Delvac 15-40 in my M for 20 years and have no problems. It has never failed to start even at -10. Summertime plowing still holds great oil pressure.

I personally would not use any box store, house brand oil, Walmart, Farm and Fleet, TSC, etc. My tractor is too important to me. I would not waste $5-6 per quart of my money for synthetics. I personally have used 15W40 Shell Rotella for the last 10 years in everything I own, and never have any problems.

You should really research you oil better before saying you wouldnt use a box store brand of oil. Walmart doesnt make oil, neither do many other stores like Advanced or Autozone. If I recall, the Walmart oil is relabeled Valvoline, as well as several others.

My friend, I do not need to do any "research". Yes, they are made by Valvoline, Havoline, and such, but they do not have "all" the additives and quality control that you will find in name brand oil. I have torn more than one engine down that used cheap oil and you can tell by the amount of sludge and wear in the engine about the quality of the oil used in the engine. As i said, my equipment is too importnat to me to use cheap oil! Did it never occur to you why the box store house brand oil is cheaper??? Got to be something when it is sometimes 25-30% cheaper. Part is advertising, but not all..... the rest is quality.

Do you suppose those engines that you took apart that had lots of sludge in them and that ran cheap oils, also had owners that were too cheap to regularly service them?

Yep, you could be right, but as I tell my customers, why spend the kind of money you spend on your equipemnt only to use cheap oil, it is not worth it.

Synthetic oils have somewhat of a reputation for exacerbating leaks. If it was damp with regular oil, it will drip with synthetic; if it was dripping with regular oil, it will pour with synthetic. Regardless, I hope whatever you decide works out well. mike

You can use what you like, but I don't think expensive synthetic oil is really nessesary. Go to L&M Fleet or Fleet Farm if you have one in your area and get a heavy duty Farm Tractor oil. I use Harvest King All Season Tractor Engine Oil in my Farmall H, it works well and gives good oil pressure.

I would use any good brand name 15w-40. I personaly think your wasting your money on syn. oils at $5 a quart that a pretty expensive oil change..., there not need in 50+ year old engines, but thats my perosnal thought on it.

Good luck

Andrew

I use 15-40 weight in the tractors because they are not run very often or very hard. Several times a year I will drive them 30-40 miles pulling a trailer with another tractor on it (probably about 2 1/2 tons total weight) and the tractor runs fine. Never had it quite get up to run yet on the M. Change oil and filter once a year. Henry
