How do I remove the front shaft starter shaft on a Farmall M? I heard the ring on the front of the tube that turns the engine comes off and there is a pin under that. How do I get the ring off? Is it threaded? I only need to replace the shaft that comes out of the bolster. I was told i have to take the whole bolster assembly off, but I think they thought I was talking about the whole starter assembly.

I think you will need to remove the bolster to get the front shaft out. At least on the H you do. The whole gizmo comes out the rear of the bolster. The flanged sheet metal collar is held in place by a big coil spring on the outside of the starter and you slide the collar to the rear compressing the spring to remove the pin.

Correct. There just isn't enough room between the bolster and the engine. you've got to remove the entire front bolster.
