Have 53 Super H ser#16785 that appears to be a hydraulics delete ordered tractor. Has the belly pump delete cover that appears to have never been off and PO added a live pump and reservoir off a 54 and moved the battery under the seat. But since this is a 53 and has the starter and the belt pulley on the right side they mounted it on the left side including the control Rod. Kinda of a cobbled up mess and I think I will take it all off and start over. Could you order it this way with no Hyd.? Last question. the grill has the two center holes and has the solid blanks on the two bigger outside holes never been punched out. Never seen one like this before. Any Ideas? Thanks Migraine

The grill is most likely original in a late model '53 as someone mentioned earlier. I was going to ask Guy Fay about this in an entry today until I saw this string. I just bought a late '53 SM on ebay that has this grill. I wondered about it myself. I was trying to get a tractor close to what my dad bought new. He claims he bought a '54 SM. Maybe he did, they did make them in Jan '54 just prior to the SMTA. More likely, it was a late '53 that he PURCHASED in '54. Back then, if you bought a new tractor in what-ever year, then by golly it was that year tractor. Anyway, I looked at a picture of dad's SM. Sure enough, it had the SMTA grill without the holes punched. I hate to assume, but based on that picture of dad's tractor, I assume the "blank, hole-less" grill is factory correct for late '53 SMs and most likely, late stage I SH's. My two-cents.

I had a grille like the one being talked about for a M/Super M where the big holes for the MTA would have been was unpunched. I couldn't think of a neat way to punch the holes if someone wanted to make it look like an MTA grille. It had some bent bars so I sold it to a vendor @ RPRU in MT. Pleasant a few years ago for $60. It had some hard to straighten bars in it. I showed it to the OEM vendor guy who had seen them before. H assumed it was a replacement grille.

I didn't know the stage 2 reservoir could be mounted on a stage 1 because of the starter. As to the grille, I have not seen one with the knockouts still in place either, but have heard of ones like that. And, all of the changes made on different models did not always occur exactly at the so called serial break, most did though. As Rusty said in that era hydraulics were always an option.

Yea that is why this thing is so nonoriginal. With the starter and belt pulley still in place on the right side the stage 2 res. and control was turned around and facing backwards and the control rod put on accordingly. This has Z codes so it is from a 54 model. But of course the hoses had to be routed under the tank and to the other side and just doesn't look right. Also has two old single stage cylinders along the belly that controlled some type of rear implement or ?? Just trying to decide what to do with this thing. The grille is unique I guess as I've never seen anything like it either. Thanks Migraine

The unpunched large holes were also seen on late SM's just prior to the SMTA. I have neighbor that has such a grill on a SM.

It was probably an inventory reduction measure when they anticipated the introduction of the SMTA and stage 2 SH. Why keep tooling and inventory for both grills?

I ordered a replacement grill for my '47 Cub in the '70's. They sent me a four bar grill.

One has to wonder if a M grill ordered 20 years after the SMTA would have arrived with a late SM or SMTA grill.

You don't have to wonder, just look at the CIH online site. It like the later IH parts books will show a farmall M, SM and MTA grill # 59516 DE which was sold as a replacement ror all. Thats probably why late grills are found on M tractors sometimes. Other grills used a lower suffix.

Hydraulics were always an option, never was standard equipment. Don't have any idea of how many came from the factoru without hydraulics and had it added later, or how many were equipped at the factory. That grill is interesting, never seen one with the knockouts still there.
