Extra Long Rear Axles on a Super H

I have a Super H that originally came new with extra long rear axles. My grandpa bought the tractor new but cut the axles down at some point so that it would fit in his storage shed which had a narrow door. Does anyone know if many Super Hs came new with extra long/wide axles? My dad swears that it came new that way. I am currently looking for replacement extra long axles to restore it to original condition. Does anyone know why some models came with longer rear axles? Is this rare? as I have never seen one before. Anyone know where I might possibly begin to look for replacements?

I remember as a kid, dad using a SH with a wide front end and a single row suger beet digger. The roller trough carried the beets underneath the long right tractor axle back to the elevator and then up to the top of the cart. I also remember that he broke the long axle on the right side a couple of times. Can't remember the SH have a long axle on the left side??? If we got into wet weather before getting the beet crop out of the ground, (had to get the potato crop out first) he would oft end up carrying alot of extra weight, mud an ice, on the beets. Changing out the broken axle shaft didn't take very long, but remember the work was done in the field and sometimes in a horizontal blizzard. Raising the tractor up to do the work was the hard part. If the weather got too cold he would put on a Heat Houser and keep digging until the ground got too frozen to get the digger in the earth. Those years he would have to wait until spring to finish digging the beets. The beets were accepted and processed the same as they were the previous fall. Maybe the sugar content was even higher after having been frozen??? The last few years of raising sugar beets, he switched to a SM with larger dameter axle shafts. The SH handled the beet digger just fine though, even with 2 to 3 ton of beets and mud and ice in the cart.

Don't know the length of these axles, but seller claims that this tractor came from (some) sugarbeet country. This one has an extra wide front as opposed to a single front wheel, as some other posters say.

Gordo if you send me an email I can measure a standard one for you. I believe there were more that just short and long though.

I checked my sales brochure, and on CaseIH.com. Two length's is all either show, but I am like you and think I remember something about another one.

I think you will find the standard axles on SH and late H with IH disc brakes are longer than other regular H axles. Thats 2 lengths + the long axles. Think the regular SH axle is near 36 inches long overall.

Yeah, I know about the 100 inches. But if you have the axle in your hand, how long is the standard, and how much longer is the extra long?

The axle shaft length of my '51 H is 35". It is the standard length. Estimating, since I don't have a long one to measure, the difference would be 6" given half the difference between 100" and 88" is 6". So, 41" would be a pretty close number.

Check with IH salvage yards. Like Allan said they are not really rare, but we don't know how many were cut down like your's have been. They were popular on C's and H's in vegetable country. Google Bates Corp, they may have them. Use to be lots of veggies grown in their part of the country. Might still be.

I have 1854 J, it has the long rear axles. Won"t fit in our drive thru corn crib doorway. The other super H"s we have are all normal length axles. 1854 J came off of a tobacco farm somewhere down around Arlington Wis. Whats the serial number on your grandpa"s super H?

Anyone who raised beets and beans ordered the 100" axles and the single front because the equipment demanded them.

Normal as rain.
