How can you tell if your hydraulic pump is up to snuff? Are there some simple tests that can be done? I think my pump may be weak. It steers fine (although it has some air in the system) but I sense that the pump is cavatating.

If the pump needs to be rebuilt/replaced is that something that I can do myself (I am an aircraft mechanic) or does it require special tools etc. that only a shop can do it? How much do the parts or replacement pump cost?

Thanks,

Joe

My guess is its going to be the filter. Because when I test drove the tractor I didnt really have any issues with the steering just a little air in the system. It seems that the more I have started the tractor (although I dont think it has ever gotten warm enough to get the fluid to operating temp) it has gotten worse. I am more then willing to bet that the filter has accumulated more debris in the fluid. The tractor hasnt been used much the past couple of years from what I was told.

Thanks,

Joe

Just a guess on the gear drive. Figured they are more numerous than hydros. Knew they had a different hyd filter and housing. So now you had both answers.

You are right on the filter Larry. Guess I had a Hydro on my mind, better to have the air in a gear drive. Hydro's don't fair well with air in the system

It is a gear drive. I have another question, how did you find out that I had a gear drive? I know I filled something out explaining what I have but I cant even find it myself. It would be nice if a signature with the tractors we have can show up at the bottom of our posts.

In addition, even though I select it I never get emails telling me when someone has replied to one of the threads I am involved it.

Thanks for all of your help!

Joe

Ted, you're talking hydrostatic there!. If he's got a gear drive the filter cover is flat and six sided with 6 cap screws. It's still on the right side kinda of in front of and below the operator's platform.

Hyd filter is on the right hand side of the clutch houseing, round cast cover. Lower rear corner. Has 2 bolts holding it on, seals with an Oring. Be carful not to break the corners off when removeing it. Air in system will cause steering wheel to turn free untill it is full of oil. Clean the round screen and install a new filter. The hose could still be the problem but change the filter first.

Here is an update. My neighbors son jumped up on the tractor today and grabbed the steering wheel to lift himself up. I noticed that the wheel was just spinning with no resistance whatsoever which didnt seem right to me. The steering is now much worse then earlier reported. There is fresh hydraulic fluid in the tractor. I need to locate the filter as I am not quite sure where it is (I havent seen any photos of its location yet). The level on the dipstick is correct. How much higher (on the dipstick above the full mark) would it be with the extra 5 gallons?

Thanks,

Joe

Another cause of air in the hyd system on a 656 is a hole in the return hose from the steering pump oil. This is routed from the top cover down to help super charge the main pump suction tube. Hose can be checked and replaced by removeing the centerlink bracket on the back of the rear frame. Can drain the oil down to inspect or can usually feel the hole in the hose, & replace it. Also while the cover is off take a good look at the bolts that hold the ring gear to the diff.case. These have a habit of breaking off then the bolt comes out and tears of the upper tube the hose goes on, will have a lot of air in the system. I assume you have a clean hyd. filter & good Hy Tran in the rear end, & full to the right level.

We thought our pump was shot too so we got a road call from the IH dealer. Turns out we just needed a pressure relief. Pressure relief is about $200 but thats cheaper than a pump.

Common cause of air in the hyd system is a leaking suction tube O ring between the rear frame and the clutch housing. Simple to check, add 5 gallons of hyd fluid, If cavitation goes away, you have found the problem. Run it 5 gal over full won't hurt a thing, put 1800 hours on one like that.

My 666 has 5 gallon extra in it for that same reason. Works like a charm.

Look to the left of page under market place, and click on tractor parts. YT has them too.

A hydraullic pump has to be tested on a flow rater to be accurately tested. As far as the price goes I have them for $430 for a new 17 gpm pump. Not sure who else has them or pricing.
