Hey Guys,

A friend of mine (with no knowledge of old tractors to speak of) has been talking to me lately about my purchase of my Super-C from Sam. Questions like what it has, power wise, what i'll use it for, etc.

His step-dad has mulled over the idea of buying a small tractor to do work around their house (an acre or two, tops), but really has no idea what tractors cost...he was looking at a newer (comparatively speaking) Kubota or similar. My friend and I got to talking, and he kinda likes the idea of getting a tractor too. I hit the local classifieds to see what was available locally.

There's a 1946 A advertised, about an hour from here, as being "Great shape, good mechanically, good rubber, have mower and ground plows". Now, it's my understanding that the normal A's don't have hydraulics...how would one operate ground plows without a set of hydraulics?
I haven't seen the tractor, though I plan to give the seller a call and perhaps arrange a get-together sometime to look over the tractor. He's asking $2100Cdn for it, everything included.

Opinions?

I think that is a good price with the mower and plow, as long as it runs good and has good rubber. As a boy I plowed lots of acres with a hand lift and as EL Toro says it is not a bad job. I would like to have the plow for mine instead of the turning plow(a disc plow, that sits in the middle.) Henry

AndrewFromNS. Here in central TX an A in a similar condition that you described would sell for $1600 - $1800 without the mower or plows. Around here the belly mower will bring about $450 and the plows $150 or so. Would be interested in the plows if the buyer doesn't want them.

I just got off the phone with the seller...

According to him, he's owned the tractor a while. Paint is practically non-existant...surface rust has an IH-red tint to it, but there's very little paint to speak of. Sheetmetal is near flawless...couple dings in the grill, but thats to be expected, I suppose. Brakes, rubber and clutch are in good shape. All the time he's owned it, it's been stored in his garage. The mower is a belly-mount, likely Woods (though he didn't know for sure), and he says it works beautifully. He's never used the plows, but they're rear-mount, and theres two of them...one plows while the other is raised, and the reverse is true when plowing in the other direction. A friend has a set like that on his Super-A, and i've plowed with them, so I know the theory is good. The guy who wants this tractor will have little use for plows anyway, so they'd likely end up on the auction block.

He seems fairly firm with his asking price, though. The fact the tractor is close is of some consideration in the price...I'd be looking at less than $100 to get it here, as opposed to a tractor from a greater distance.

Anyone else?

third party image

The A plow has heavy metal springs to assist in raising the plow. The long lever used for raising and lowering the plow gives some more mechanical advantage too. They do a fine job plowing too. Hal
PS: A picture with the 16-inch plow mounted on the tractor. Sorry for the quality of the picture

Three possible systems. A trail type plow with self lifting wheel actuated lift, a exhaust gas driven "Liftall" pneumatic lift, or a hand lift system with a spring assist. JimN

A bit high for my area. Good SA's with hydraulics and cultivator can be bought for less than that. Seen lots of them in the 1300 to 1800 range. For me 1500 would be high for a plain A.

Same as George here in my part of the country, where plain A's are cheap and don't sell well. Maybe $800 - $900 for a fairly weathered but good running one to $1200 or $1400 for a nice one. Super A's on the other hand, sell quick here and are usually priced from $1800 - $2500.
