Sad thing is Gene, If the economy gets worse like they are talking about, WE might be riding those donkeys that people in India and China are no longer using.

About 40 years ago, there was a little roadster sold here in the U.S. called a "Berkely".

It didn't even have an electric starter, there was a pull rope on the center console. I only saw one, but it was kinda cute. But that was before all the required safety equipment.

(I'm not knocking safety equipment. Belts and an airbag allowed my wife to walk away from a 60 mph head on collision a couple of years ago. I hasten to add, the collision was not of my wife's making.)

As crappy as the thing has to be to only cost $2500, I bet it could cost your life. I bet hitting a dog would total it.

The article said 5 "bottoms"
A step sideways in technology to allow more polution/accidents/resource use/congestion/legal hassles/fights to get to use it. Oh Well. JimN

curious what is the greater pollution? the emissions of older vehicle driving, or older vehicle being junked out and new one being created? assumes older vehicle is kept in tune, to make it simple. i would wager that the creation of a 40mpg new vehicle creates more pollution in the short time of manufacture compared to the total pollution over years of older vehicle. (my wager is just one beverage though!)

Interesting Question. Complex answer.
If an old vehicle is considered to have been made with fresh mined steel that was processed with (lets say 1980 technology and power generation)and lets say it gets 15MPG and is no longer on its catalyst. Lets put it at 160K miles. The new car is made from much of the old one, with (US pollution control requirements on the processing of the steel). And US labor for manufacturing.
The new car has maybe 1/2 the energy invested in it than the old one did, and runs at 30mpg and is much cleaner in operation. I believe it will be best for the system if it is replaced. Under those conditions.
However the issue with the low cost car is the drastic increase in total numbers of cars driving ever more miles on bad roads in India and China.
(China tried to reduce its air pollution for an experiment to see if they could get the level down to the point that athletes could tolerate competing at the olympics. With about a 40% reduction in vehicle traffic, the problem was reduced to about twice the pollution that is deemed reasonable. (these are ball park data, I did not re-look it up). If even "clean" cars are tripled in number in those countries, the pollution is drastically worse, and the consumption is drastically increased. JimN

Doesn't make any difference what it cost, because of enviormental and safety regulations in U.S. it will never reach our shores.

Think of a Yugo, but with fewer luxuries. If I remember right, 33 HP, no A/C, no power steering, no radio, belt drive, 1 windshield wiper, and it will go 60 MPH.

Also no crumple zones, no airbags, no collapsible steering column.

If all US safety requirements were met, it would weigh a lot more, cost a lot more, and would require a larger engine in order to move the extra weight, and the fuel mileage would drop.

Have to have all those safety features on a car making it weigh at least 3000 pounds but my neice's 100 pound moped is street legal.
