Howdy, boys. I bought an H/M starting crank on ebay last week. It even had a good spinner on it that was not frozen up. The mailman delivered the box yesterday - yep, the empty box with a hole in the corner. Sunny Beaches!
Oh well, back to the drawing board....

Contact the Post office. I had the same thing happen with a belt pulley drive for an Allis WC a few years back.It took a few phone calls but I ended up talking to a nice lady in Minneapolis.Apparantly thats where all the undeliverable mail in the midwest ends up.She didn't have any idea what a Allis pulley drive looked like but I faxed her a picture from the parts book and she called me back saying she had found it and where should she send it. She said it's a good idea to put the name and address of the person it's going to right on the item with a tag or a piece of tape so if something like this happens they can figure out where it belongs. Good luck, Ed

Mike,
Even though he did not offer insurance, it is his responsibility to pack the parcel secerely, if he did not, then he should have to refund your money, 100%. If you get no response, contact Ebay. Did he use UPS, DHL, USPS? Did they note damage on box when delivered to you? Even if you had insurance, most carriers will not pay a claim due to poor packing. When you present a package for shipment, you are telling the shipper that it is packed securely.

City Boy,

I have 2 "H" crank handles. When you say "spinner" do you mean that sleeve on the gripping end? I always wondered if they were supposed to be loose enuf to spin on the crank. Both of mine are stuck tight to the handle.
I would be willing to part with one of those handles, if you still want one.

Mike: Sorry to hear about your shipping loss. I'd contact the shipper, no need of parcel being bundled up that loosely. I've had parcels come in here from as far away as NE and IA, every thing in tact, and steel inside as well. Rusty packs a good parcel, even after my move, I've still got bubble wrap and styrafoam chips floating around my shop. Annoying as those may be, Two 20 lb. hunks of steel landed here intact.

Dave: I think he should change to City Boy Mike, at least that is what I find myself wanting to call him. I've even done it couple of time on forum.

However since he's moved to the country, and if he no longer believes City Boy is a good choice, maybe he should go with Country Boy Mike. I could call him worse, but only when he pokes fun at me.

Hugh:
Hey! I resemble that remark! (LOL). And, I deserve it, too.
Hugh, do you remember the time I made the typo two or three years ago and typed "HUGE" MacKay on the board? What goes around, comes around, I guess. Take care, ol' buddy.

Mike: I do, but then you and I have always been good at giving and taking jabs. Too bad more folks couldn't laugh like us. I've always found YT to be just a bit on the serious side.

This area is home to some quite serious competition plowing. Since I moved here 6 years ago, I have been encouraged to join. I think I will now that I have a bit more time. I did a bit of plowing, near the road here at my new place. One of the club members told the others I might be a bit of competition. One of the other members relayed this to me. I came home, looked at my plowing again, nothing special, wasn't even staisfied with my own work. Next morning I joined the plowing club boys at the coffee shop. I point blank asked the question, "Are you folks really that bad?" We all enjoyed a good laugh.

But then, what the hell can we expect, the whole damn world is much tooooo serious today. This kind of reminds me of story from half century ago. Local family thought they had a mentally chalanged son, they went to church every Sun., and all but mother sat right behind Deacon Brown and family. Mother sang in the choir. One Sun. dad stayed home, jr. was in the seat alone behind the Brown family. Jr. broke wind, could be heard above everything going on, immediately he jumped to his feet and yelled hurrraaaayyy for Deacon Brown, then quietly sat down. The Deacon was heard to say later, the young lad deserves more credit than we give him.

Dave: No. My name is mike durhan. I just tagged "McCoy" onto my handle because CityBoy was already taken, and McCoy rhymed with CityBoy. Since then I moved to the country. Bought a small farm several months ago. So, it's not a good handle for me anymore, but I'm resigned to it, and it's what I'm known by here on the forum.

Obviously a very poor job of packing. I have shipped many items similar to that crank. None of them ever came out of the box. I would contact the seller if I were you.

Yes, I agree, Rusty. Seller should have packed box with padding. In this case there was no evidence of padding at all. Additionally, the seller did not offer insurance either. I am waiting for the seller to contact me, at which time, we will see what sort of metal he is made of. Hopefully, sterling.

Oh shoot. I insure all my packages. Those not insured by the carrier are "self insured" Let me know if you still need a hand crank but i am not sure I can find one with a working spinner.

I have freed up the spinners on several of those cranks. A little heat from a torch, some pentrating oil, and a dose of patience.

Thanks, Howard. I may be contacting you for a price on one of your better ones, if the ebay seller offers to replace and does not have another himself.

Same thing happened to me, except for me, I still had some "pieces" of my delivery. Appearently items don't like to be used as a football...

You should file a complaint, I did and at least I recovered my shippingcosts...

Kind Regards
