Fellows I was out stretching the legs of my H yesterday and noticed it was sluggish. Before we had the head reworked it ran great. My father put the carb back on when we were putting it back together and I noticed that throttle control on the governor seemed to be a little tite. I took the carb and everything back off and then back together with no binding it works free. Now it will not slow down below half throttle. I have not adj anything. I did notice that there are no gaskets on the gov. tube at eather end. Could this be the cause? Also it will die if you try to start off in 5 gear now.

Maybe your father turned the idle speed screw, not realizing what it was when he put it back on? Nothing personal against your Dad, but mine did it once to play a trick on me.....

These adjustments are done with the engine off. 1. Loosen the 2 screws that are holding the governor tube to the governor housing & gently tap it so it "centers" itself then tighten the screws. 2. Remove the top cover on the governor housing (has the pipe going to the top of the engine) and check governor to carburetor synchronization. With the throttle lever set wide open, the clevis pin should just slip into the governor connecting rod that is in the tube. Adjust the clevis height if needed & lock the nut. You may need small fingers & a right-angle needle nose pliers to make the job easier.

3. With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw (on the bottom facing down to the rear) in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until the engine begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out ˝ turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn't starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.

4. The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the idle stop screw (just to the rear of the governor shaft tube) to set the low speed RPM.
On the "H"& “M” carb, the idle mixture screw (faces to the front just below the idle stop screw) is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Repeat the procedure again to make sure “all is well”.

Ok I found the procedure for synchronizing the gov. to the carb. this helped so I adj the carb per the service manual. Still boggs down when you let out the clutch in 5th gear but it idles great and gov. does increase and decrease engine speed when going up and down hills.

Never seen and H or M that would take off from a stop in 5th gear with out slipping to clutch way to much. The way to use 5th is start out in 4th then shift up to 5th or sit and a hill and get it rolling first. I have 3 Hs and they are all the same as far as using 5th

Starting in fifth is pretty hard on the clutch, and I recommend a shift from 4th to fifth. Make it a slow shift, and it will grind just a little. It is best to double clutch it. Idle down as you pull it out of 4th, then let the clutch out briefly, push in the clutch and then slip it into high. This is hard to do unless practiced. Are you positive you have the carb and governor coupling together at the carb connection, it is tricky little metal fingers, and causes related problems, some of which sound like yours. JimN

The pin on the gov rod is between the 2 ears on the butterfly. When I first got this tractor when you let out the clutch is 5th gear it would about give you whiplash taking off then engine speed would die off as you started rolling. It seems to be running good. But the hole in the end of the gov rod is much bigger than the end on the carb is this ok.

I am not sure what you are describing, but there should be no large differences in the system. It should never bind, but in is not supposed to have play. JimN
