I have a Farmall 560 gasser, which puts out a little blue smoke and likes to foul plugs. My cousin worked for Harvester for a lot of years, both as a mechanic and salesman. He indicates it likely needs valves and rings done. I can probably get him to do the work in the spring, but he says we would likely need a sleeve puller. How much does such a thing cost? More than it would to just take it to an established shop where I don't know who they are, what they know, etc. Is there another way to get a sleeve out? I have never thought about doing anything like this.

I do know that once you split a tractor, it makes sense to look at everything and fix that which needs to be fixed, so I am planning to have the money on hand to do it.
I look forward to whatever guidance I can get. Thank you in advance,

Louie

It may only need valves and guides. You can do a compression test and determine if it need rings also. Do a compression test, then do it again with a couple of shots of motor oil in each cylinder and see if the oil seals the rings. If it does, you need rings too.

Rings are really cheap and if the cylinders look good there is no reason to change the sleeves, just remove the ridge and put new rings in. You'll get many hours of satisfactory service out of it for 20% of the money. Your cousin was just preparing you for the worst. You can rent a sleeve puller.

If it were me, I'd put in 20w50 oil and hotter plugs and enjoy it for a few more years.

You could have one made by your local metal & welding shop similar to this one made by Keith.
You would need to have a puck machined to fit the sleeve bore and with enough clearance to clear the block bore. Hal
