Super A gurgling sound after shut-off

When I get through running my old 48' Super A, and shut it off, a few seconds after it quits, I hear a brief, moist, oily, sucking, or gurgling sound coming from inside the engine. (It's different and seperate from the cooling system noises) The engine has been overhauled once, and it still does it. I can imagine some left over compression leaking around a valve, or by the rings into the oil pan or someplace. Like I say, it's done it for as long as we've known each other, & every thing else is fine. Do they all do that?

It's the oil gurgling in the air cleaner when the engine rocks over backward. Perfectly normal if it's not knocking and running backward. Try taking the oil cup off the air cleaner, start and stop the engine and see if it happens.

Trent: I agree, what you suggest can happen. Again if he lets the tractor idle couple minutes, it's unlikely to do that. These tractors were not built for folks that can drive in yard, hit the ignition switch and be in the house before the tractor stops firing.

Kind of like kicking someone in groin, he'll gurgle and groan. That is exactly what the tractor is doing. These old tractors weren't built for folks that drop the clutch as the first piston fires, or back in the house before the tractor stops turning.

ddg: Quite normal, Super As have been doing that for 60 years. Yes, they did it when they were hot off the assembly line and they still do it.

You can help the situation, maybe even eliminate the gurgling, all it requires is two minutes idling before shut down. Remember it took 5 minutes to feed and groom the horse at the end of the day. Surely you can groom the SA for 2 minutes. They were both part of the evolution.

Are you sure that the engine isn't turning backwards after you shut-down? Take a look at the fan blades & watch to see if they rotate backwards for a moment. Solution: Idle the engine down, let it cool for a bit, turn the ignition switch off & let out the clutch while in gear to stop any further engine rotation.

It caused by the same processes that cause the cooling system to make noises. The oil pump stops circulating and the oil starts heating which causes pressures trying to force hot oil thru things like check valves and creates vacumms where the oil is cooling faster. Dad's old JD's air cleaner would pull air thru the oil bath and burp a couple time after it was shut down.
