I have a 300U. I am having a problem with it running, It gets started, runs a little rough, will run for a couple of minutes, then starts sputtering and quits. I thought it might be the fuel system so I have done the following:

1) Cleaned the sediment bowl. There was some gunk, not much.
No result.

2) Cleaned the tank. No result.

3) Replaced the fuel line. No result.

3) Took off the air intake, squirted carb cleaner in. No result.

Now do I take the carb apart, or look at the ignition system?

Thanks for the help!

Spook:

If the tractor's been sitting around unused for a few months, check the air cleaner. I have a 300U, and the squirrels were kind enough to fill the air cleaner with hickory nuts. I'm lucky I checked before trying to start the engine.

I think I'd clamp an inductive timing light on the fat coil-to-center-of-distributor-cap wire. If the strobe ceases when RPMs start to fall off, then there's a spark problem. I think it's unlikely, but it's so cheap and easy to test you should probably do it.

Sure sounds like a fuel starvation problem!

Recommend removing the 1/4" pipe plug drain from the bottom of the carburetor. You should get a continuous, SOLID stream of gas about the diameter of a pencil out of the drain opening.

However if you get just a spash of gas that tapers to a dribble there's a fuel restriction somewhere.

First try cleaning carb the inlet screen. (Disconnect the fuel line at the carb then remove the large brass fitting on the carb the fuel line screws into. The screen is inside the brass fitting and should come out with it.)

If that doesn't do it, drop the carb bowl (you can do this with the carb still on the tractor...). Be looking for a plugged float needle valve, float level set to high, the float hanging up inside the bowl, etc.

----

Only if you are certain it's not a fuel flow problem would I start messing with the ignition!

Also. If you take the fuel inlet fitting with screen off the carb, get a can of spray carb cleaner, stick the nozzle into where the fuel fitting was, and spray a generous amount in there. No guarantees, but that sometimes will be enough to dis-lodge any dirt and free up a sticky needle valve.Do this with the drain plug removed.

I would first check your spark its quick and easy to do and will point you which way to go. Then I would pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you get a good steady flow of gas for 2-5 minutes. If you do then pull the main jet and spray it out good with carb cleaner, leave the drain plug out when you do that. Been a coulpe years since I messed with a 300 but if it has the main jet that lays down on the bottom of the carb you can also pull it out and turn on the gas and make sure you get a good flow there. If you don't get a good flow in both places its time to open up the carb unless of couse you don't have a good spark

It takes air, fuel & spark. Sounds like you have spark & fuel, make sure the air intake tube isn't plugged with some kind of wasp or mud dobber nest, inside where you can't see it at first.
