The coiled wire "resistor?" on the back of the light switch is broken. What do I do? Someone at the coffer shop said buy and ignition resistor for an old modle dodge and wire it in. I know that you all can tell me without a doubt what to do. I'm almost ready to crank her up after overhaul and rewire. 52 super C. Thanks a million.

Ben,
If your tractor has the 3-position light switch (O-D-B), then the resistor is to Dim the lights in the 'D' position. That's all it does. If you can use a crimp connector to tie the resistor wire's broken ends together, it should work again and won't hurt a thing - maybe the dim lights would be a little brighter due to slightly less resistance.
If you don't ever have any need to dim the lights, just jumper the two resistor terminals with a short piece of wire or leave it the way it is.

If you have the L-H-D-B 4-position light switch, it will have two resistors. The one with the large wire is the dimmer resistor. The other resistor is for the low-charge setting for the generator. If it's broken, the Ammeter will not show a charge on the 'L' setting.

No need to dim lights. What do you suggest, leave it as is or jumper wire. Thanks again.

If you leave it as is, with the switch on "D" the rear light will burn bright and the front lights will be dark. Setting the switch to "B" will have all lights burning bright.

However f you jumper across the resistor all the lights will burn right with the switch at both "D" and "B".

Personally I'd jumper the resistor. Otherwise you could possibly shut down the tractor with the switch set to "D", thus leaving with the rear light burning and not know it (the front lights would be dark).

Leaving it alone is fine. A resistor out of a car heater blower speed control will also work fine. JimN
