I just got an e-mail from a concerned YT member on my well beig due to the fires. Those fires are well to the south of me. We, the Navy, are affected because the fires are around San Diego and Camp Pendleton. But I am far from that danger.
I'm just posting this in case anyone else had concern. But please put those familes in your prayers. Over 800 homes burned down so far from what I've heard in the news. third party image

Yuba City is considered Northern California. Around the Modesto Stockton area is where that "line" is located, and down at the Grapevine mouontains right below Bakersfield is where the "South line" is located.

Anyway, if you get out to Yosemite, Kings Canyon, or Sequoia any time soon, you let me know!

How many burned down this year in Illinois, where you are from Cmore? Last year? Or were torn up by Tornados, or collapsed from snow weight?

I'm not sure what you are trying to get at. Are you saying that people shouldn't live in California because sometimes there are fires that get out of control? Does the same hold true for any other place that has a natural disaster?

What point are you trying to make?

What I'm saying is that when you live in a high desert with nothing but scrub brush, 10 inches of rainfall per year and 4 percent humidity, coupled with 80 to 100 mph santa anna winds each and every year, you should expect this. Just like New Orleans...what do you expect when you build a house 10 feet below sea level? My daddy taught me not to build in a ditch, low spot or amongst dry brush...Cmore

I'm actually in central California. Yosemite Natl' is just north of me, about a 2 hour drive in total to get to the middle of the park. Sequoia Natl' and Kings Canyon Natl' are just to the east, 40 miles to the gate of Sequoia. The Sierras Nevada range is just fantastic.

Ok , I thought I read you were in San Diego. My bad! When I was out that way the last time in 97, I bought a 1924 Oldsmobile in Gridley CA just north of Yuba City in the central valley. Lots of nice farm ground through there. I was there when they were picking almonds in the fall. That was something to watch! (if you could see anything through the dust clouds!) Going to those parks has always been on my list of things to do.

Have been keeping those families in our prayers. One of our friend's children had to evacuate his house. Scary times for the family waiting for a phone call...

As for a good place to live - I'm happy here in AZ on the Colorado River. Here's the view I will have from my new house in a couple of months:

God be with all the people in California during these hard times.

Glad everything is ok! That is pretty country! I have driven down the coast out there in the past but never made it to the mountains in SoCal. Did go through the mountains east of Sacramento and that is specacular! Here in western IN we get a few earthquakes once in a blue moon, the last one was just a couple years ago. There is a fault line that runs near the IL border down the the Ohio river. I am glad it moves once in a while so we don"t get the big one like happened in 1803. 3 years ago a small twister went through town but only knocked down a few trees and a tree smashed one car.

One of the benefits of where I live is that 50 miles up the mountains to the east of me are 3 National Parks. Gorgeous country. I just drive up there for the snow.
Here is a view from my front door from back in Feb.

So I bundled up the family the next day for some sledding. This is what we got to drive in. My Subaru handled it like a pro.

Yes, very pretty, Mike.

But doesn't the Hayward Fault run under Carson Street?

We don't have cellars in CA. I have no idea why.
But honestly, there is risk anywhere you live. That's inherent in life. We have very rare Earthquakes, and very rare heavy rain flash floods, and sometimes we get big fires. Up north they get tons of rain and gloom. Back east it's winter storms, summer hurricanes and tornados, and in the middle well, tornados, and cold temps I guess.
Some of the biggest predicted earthquakes will come from the fault in the Mississippi valley. You can't hide from risk. Just wrap yourself tight in your abestos blanket and hope for the best I guess. third party image

Well, I live in a house that is over 200 years old. It's on a hilltop so flooding is not possible. It has survived numerous hurricanes although none in recent years. Large acreage forest fires are unheard of. The last one within 300 miles involved Bar Harbor, ME over fifty-five years ago.

Yeah, a car plowed into my neighbors house 25 years ago. It nearly collapsed. Within a year or two, I built a granite wall on my two vulnerable sides using 2-3 ton blocks.

My only tribulation now is keeping the scrap thieves off my property.

As to snow, why don't you hum a few bars of White Christmas. "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow".

I can't figure out why people choose to own real property in locations known to burn over every once in a while. Or why others choose to live below sea level only a dike away from unlimited water. Or why insurance companies write policies on these properties and make these follies possible.

Seems to me that if I had to live in Southern CA, the house would be made of steel, concrete, gypsum, mica, and tile. The cellar would be a 100,000 gallon cistern equipped with a diesel fire pump. The upholstery and bedding would be fashioned from asbestos. Ummm, maybe no on the last one.

How many times have we seen a house in CA completely burned down next to a pool full of water?
