C200 engine noise

I have a Farmall 544 with the C200 gas engine. It has 2500 hours and runs great. I always run premium gas in it. I have owned it almost a year and have put about 50 hours on it. I have never been around these engines before and it seems noisy. There seems to be a lot of "rattles" inside at idle speed. I don't think it's like a rod knock. It has good oil pressure even when hot and the oil stays clean. I'm just wondering how much internal noise is normal with these engines. I know it has a balancer, could that be some of the noise?

You're probably wasting money running premium fuel in that. Low compression tractor engines should not need premium.

Our 544 has always rattled. It got to the point that it would push oil out around the spark plugs and rattle them loose until they would fall out!

Dad overhauled (did not over-bore and put in oversize pistons like I recommended) with new pistons, rings, etc. and it still rattles. Been that way for several hundred hours without a problem.

There is no real way to answer that question. The best solution is to have a comparison with another tractor with the C200 engine running in it. Describing your sound is like figuring out what is in someone else's pocket by looking at it from the outside. Even recordings do not help much.
My take is to adjust the valves and run it. JimN

That"s exactly what I have done, adjusted the valves and ran it. So far seems ok.
