Does anyone know of any cheap rebuilt or new Hyd. pumps for a 400 gas (1955) All remotes work, but selector valve won't work powersteering unless a spool valve is pulled, then works excellent. I'm near omaha, NE

Think you need what IH called the regulator, saftey and flow control valve repaired or replaced instead of a pump.

Hey there Mr. Slater. Do you know a few things about those regulator valves? I have a good pump but can not get any fluid to flow to the Quick disconnects. When I pull the lever I get a buzzing sound but nothing else.
I got a different reg./ safety valve from a salvage yard and replaced mine with it and it did not help.
Service man at IH did not believe the problem was in the spool valves,
Where else, or what else could it be?
Thank you SDE

Does tractor have power steering or was it recently installed or removed?

No power steering that I am aware of. Old farmer had this tractor and they swapped some parts to their other 400s(2). How would I know which parts parts need to be changed?

If system has all the right parts and you are sure pump is good the problem is most likly in regulator and safety valve or a suction leak. Suction leaks can be were the steering and valve support post bolts to reservoir with 4 bolts, gasket there, or at each end of suction pressure pipes to pump,O rings. If suction leaks on pump end oil will usualy leak though with tractor parked. If you get into regulator valve check for stuck pistons, bad springs or ball and seat not sealing. Also check screen and orifice for pluging while apart. Before doing any of that maybe we can determan if you have correct parts. The control valve nearest support post, does it have 2 hydraulic ports to front of tractor(they should have pipe plugs) or 1 port ? Does your regulator block have any ports in the bottom pluged or otherwise? Its posiable also that power steering and non power steering parts are mixed and a port left pluged off. Also make sure oil is getting to suction side of pump.

First, I would like to thank you for your time.
The only two things that I can see, that are different between the two tractors are,the one with the power steering has a small fitting coming out the bottom of the reg/saftey valve that the hose going to the P/S actuator attaches to, and has a flow control retainer in the side of the same block. The other system has a pipe plug instead of the that retainer. I have had the reg./safety valve apart about five times. Of course it is very possible that because I am not famialiar with hydraulics, that I may not recognize the problem when I see it. My intent was to swap parts between these two tractors until I found what the problem was, but I chose not to screw up a system that was working.
Thank you SDE

One thing I was trying to find out is about the control valve nearest the regulator block. On the powersteering tractors a U shaped hydraulic tube goes from it to regulator block. One used with powersteering only tractors only has one outlet hole torward front of tractor compared to 2 for non PS. If you have the PS type valve used with a non PS regulator block that may be a problem. The outlet holes have pipe plugs with regular valve and someone may have pluged single hole in PS valve if parts are switched around. Also with PS a passage is blocked with a plug beween control valve and top reservoir post, plug could be left in there if parts switched. Control valve is removed to remove plug and it may stay in post or control valve upon removing valve. Regular non PS tractor hydraulics won't work with plug in.

I remember seeing the tube you are talking about on the one with PS. I will check the non PS tractor for it,but I don't think it has it. I have the Hydraulic lines off it that go to the front of the tractor. They do not have a plug in them. But the valve next to the reg. block goes to the back(I think). I will check that one.
Thank you SDE
