My 1940 Farmall A, runs at 1500 rpm's, how many more rpm's can the engine do before it starts to damage the piston walls, or other things?

Hi Jim, They used the exact same motor in the U-2 power unit and depending on the set up, they were set to run at 2000rpm. I wouldn"t worry about it.RPM equals power. Run a good oil and have fun.

The full-load rpms were 1400. No load rpm is 1540 (I&T manual). As to increased speeds: F-12 engine started out at 1400 full-load and went to 1650 with F-14. A does not have the same engine, but bore and stroke were same. Modern oils are much better than they were in the 30s.
Were the manufacturers just playing it safe in keeping revs low? Obviously, I don't have the answer--just thinking out loud.

If I remember correctly, the factory set the RPM's at 1540. I run my B at about 100 RPM over that. Some people run them at 2,000 RPM and more for pulling, but I think that is too much, if you want it to live a long life.

Just my opinion though.

What was it rated at from the factory for max high idle engine speed? Our W6 is rated to run 1450 no load rpm, but ours does somewhere in the neighborhood of 1650 or so. It has been that way for 40+ years, and had its only engine rebuild sometime in the 1970's. However, we don't run it wide open pulling a plow for a week straight anymore, either. As long as you are sensible with its use, it probably won't do too much damage. Just because you have the extra rpm doesn't mean you need to use it 24/7/365. . .
