You don't need a tach. Start by running the engine full throttle and if the mower has too much vibration then adjust it slower until it runs smoother. Like was said keep the sickle sections sharp and should work fine.

Afternoon Charles, One other thing, you dont need much RPM to run that sickle mower, the tractor can just kind of idle along and they cut great as long as its sharp !

Why do you need a tach?

Full throttle no load is about 570 rpm on my A, so I go to full throttle and pull back one notch for 540.

You could use a small engine type tach that has an inductive pickup from a spark plug wire - they are digital and also keep track of hours.
