I have an early 1939 M #2241. I think Ive read somewhere that the newer outside pto unit(out side back of tracter) shaft will not work on it .Is this correct and do I have to buy one for that model? Thanks , Buck E

Thanks, Men for the info. Beleive I will pull shaft and have a look. Don't think I want that new pto as bad since Wayne MN told me his experiance. Wanted to use this tractor with brush hog since it uses propane, lot cheaper than gas. Thanks again for reply. Buck E

Pull the PTO and check for engagement type. These guys are telling you what is typical, however I have a flat old style PTO that has the splined engaging collar.

There are 3 types of PTOs in Ms the flat type slot or "dog" drive used until about mid 1940s, the flat type spline drive used from about mid 1940 until about mid 1943 and the late type used from about mid 1943 on. The visible part of the 2 flat types are somewhat different in appearance. Dates are from memory and may be a little off.

You will have to drain the gear oil, pull the top off the transmission, remove all the gears, find a press to remove the gears from the lower shaft, find a new style shaft to press the gears back on, reinstall the gears, (check the bearings while you are in there) & install the top with a new gasket.
Now you can install the new style PTO. Replace the gear oil while you are at it.
Just did that on a 1940 model.

There are two different style drives for the PTO's if you have the style that is flat on the back the tractor you can not put the newer stlye in with out changeing the counter shaft that drives it. Early is a flat drive newer is a splind style
