Any ideas on how to clean a block full of rust with the crank, bearings and pistons still in-tact? I only know to boil them, any easier ways?? thanks!!

On our 806 Diesel I drained the cooling system, filled it with vinegar, and let it run for an hour or so. Unfortunately, I didn"t have any field work to do, so it never got really hot, but it cleaned out a ton of lime and mineral deposits. It is supposed to work better the hotter it gets, so next time I will try to work it or block the radiator to keep it hotter. It also made the tractor smell like italian salad dressing for about a week or so. . .

This subject has been discussed before. (archives) One other cheap fix is to use dish washing powder and water, run for a while and drain. Repeat as often as you like.
I would suggest that you try this one first. I have not tried it yet, but intend to try it soon.

What are we working on?

I would remove the water pump and side plates from the block to start with. Use compressed air and water/pressure washer to clean out as much as possible. Sometimes filling with water then hitting with an air wand under the water can stir it up and flush it out.

When you put it back together there should be some radiator flushes available to help get more out. Drain using the lower radiator hose so it comes out faster with more crud suspended in the water.

I think I've heard of using dishwashing detergent as well...

In addition to using various chemical treatments, see if you can find a "back flusher". I don't know if radiator shops still use them anymore or not. They inject water and air together causing a bubbling and boiling action to stir up the crud and flushes it out.

Boil the block.
