Can I replace 6 V batteries w/ 12 V in a Farmall 560D

Has anyone replaced the two 6V batteries in a farmall 560D w/ two 12V batteries? What are the pros and cons of this?

The batteries have always been a problem on the 560D, since all the newer tractors come with two 12V batteries hooked in parallel, why wouldn't this work on this tractor. I know enough to switch the series arrangement to parallel. Is there any other modifications that would be necessary? It's 12V either way.

Any comments or experiences will be apprectiated.

Thanks for all the replies!! I'm going to change it over to one or two 12v with good CCA.

Mine has 2 12V batteries in it and I have no problem with it.

My D19 came with two sixes in series, positive ground, so that was the way I ran it for 30 years. Then, a couple of years ago the batteries went kaput on a holiday weekend and our local farm store was out of sixes, so instead of driving 30 miles I just swung into Walmart, bought two 12's and hooked them up parallel, still with positive ground.

Then, this summer the generator quit so I converted it to an alternator and negative ground. Same two batteries, still doing what they're supposed to.

Also, I've run two 12's in parallel on a 4x4 pickup with a snow plow on it for years, for the extra amperage both for starting after it's sat for a month in cold weather and for running the lift on the plow. No problem with that, either.

Most diesel pickups come from the factory with two 12's in parallel. If there was an inherent problem with the setup, I doubt they'd to it.

I'd say go ahead with your 560 if you want.

I use the best batteries from Walmart too. Even in my garden tractor. I like that 3 year free replacement. No problem if one fails to have it adjusted. I had a Chevy pickup that had a diesel
engine in it originally, but was changed to a 350
Olds gas engine when I bought it. It had the dual battery setup. It always started easily in cold weather. Hal

Thats why its best (like when you buy a new truck) that BOTH batteries be matched identical in age n size and design and manufacture and EVERYTHING to reduce what actually is an "inherent problem" that if they arent, then one can possibly feed off the other if all things arent equal. Its an inherent engineering problem anytime two batteries are connected in paralell which isnt so much of a problem when they are in series. However, if only one battery cant provide the necessary cranking amps, then theres no choice but to hang another one on in paralell cuz in series the cranking amps isnt additive grrrrr rrrrr

Yall take care now, fun discussion

You can do it anyway you want, 2-6 volt in series, 2-12 volt in parallel or 1-12 volt, as long as you maintain the cranking amps. Probably the biggest killers of batteries are cables too small and poor charging from old generators. It's not the batteries at fault, thus the change will probably not cure your problem.

I just removed a 6 volt battery that gave me 13 years service here in Canada. I have started 6 volt gas tractors without starting aids at -40F. Very rarely do I not get 6 or more years from a battery, 6 or 12 volt. The key is battery, cable and charging system care.

Id rather replace two sixes in series with one single super heavy duty 12 volt n be done with it as theres less cables n connectins to go bad n worry with,,,,, ,,,,,less chance of one battery caniballizing the other (if in paralell),,,,, ,cheaper n easier.....

Id use at least a 900 preferably a 1000 to 1100 CCA heavy duty 12 volt battery. Unless its extremelyyyyy yyyy cold or the tractors worn out n hard to start, I dont think you need two 12's in paralell really as a single good heavy duty 12 ought to do the trick, but if not and you want two 12's for more cranking ampacity, buy them new equal n matched to lessen the situation of one feeding off the other.

We switched 560 to one big 12 volt years ago and it works better than 2 6's. When ever a pickup needs a new battery I take the one out of the 560 and put in the pickup and put the new one in the 560 so it usually has a fairly new battery. 86 series tractors have 2 12 volts paralel and I've never had trouble with my 1486 but have always replaced both at same time, even ran it summer on 1 12 . How long does the tractor typically sit unused? The problem with paralleling batteries is that the one with slightly higher open terminal voltage will discharge into the lower one. Series battery arrangements don"t have that problem. We had an Isuzu diesel truck here at work with parallel 12V batteries that would sit a month or two at a time on a regular basis and we were always having to jump start it even after replacing the batteries twice. I switched it to two series 6 volt batteries five years ago and haven"t had to jump it once since. Having said that, though, big 12V batteries are a lot more common and easier to find than 6Vs.

sure, you can do whatever you want. I've gone to just using one 12 v in mine. less terminals to keep clean and seems to work just as well.
