I just took my "genuine IH" Super H thermostat out of the bag and enclosed was an instruction sheet telling me to reuse the old "poppet". I have torn down three C164 engines during this project and none had this poppet installed. There is a photo of it on the instruction sheet and it appears to be a sleeve of which one end slips over the radiator end of the thermostat and the other end sits in a recess in the housing. Anyone familiar with this??

I looked in the parts illustration, and have not found that part. Stretching my memory, it is a ring of metal that holds the T stat into the housing. If so, it could be made at a muffler shop to the size needed (stainless would be good) JimN

I just replaced the T-stat in my super h and I had no issues like the one you describe. The new T-stat looks quite different than the one that came out, but its fits correctly and works fine. I bought mine from NAPA if that helps ya.
