On this new sickle mower I just bought, how much can I expect to pay for a complete rebuild of the sickle bar itself? The unit I have is not the one with the crazy wheel that attaches to the drawbar but the one that attaches directly to the rear of a "M".

I'm not having this done, I'm doing this myself. I'm just interested in finding out how much those of you who have done it already have paid for parts.

I've started to disassemble the bar itself. I see I will need some more of those carriage type bolts that retain the guards and clamps to the bar.

I will need a set of knives and the little blades that rivet into the guards as well as their rivets.

I'm thinking I'll get the bolts from the hardware store if IHC wants too much for them. I may even go with stainless too. The bearings in the pulley drive assembly feel nice so I might not have to change them. Either way they will get torn down in the rebuild and packed with grease. I'm blasting the whole unit piece by piece and giving it a good undercoat of POR-15 then a topcoat of red. It will also be converted to 3 point cat 3 as well.

Can you guys give me an idea of the parts cost on these?
The wooden pitman arm needs changing too. Do you guys make your own or buy them from somewhere? I was thinking of cutting one from a ash or hickory hoe or shovel handle or making one out of oak or cypress.

Patrick, why don't you just get you a 3 point mower instead of chopping that one up? You have a tractor it fits as is. # point 1300 mowers can be bought here at sales for less than 300 dollars as londfg as they have IH instead of Frd or New Idea on them. Don't make since to me since all 3 are IH mowers. I haven't bought any mower parts in several years as I baought a bunch the last time I did. Then pitman sickles were around 40 dollars, rock gaurds were around 6.50 a piece, takes 28 of them for a 7 footer. Combine gaurds are cheaper as they are doubles. Work very well if you don't have rocks. They also don't use ledger plates in those. The last new pitman rod I bought was 12.95 not including the ends. The lower end assembly with both cast straps, spring and latching lever will run around 50 to 60 bucks. I don't think the other end is available new now. If it is it will be higher than 50. I make most of my pitman rods out of White Oak, sawed out on a table saw and milled on a jointer to make them look nice. I can provide the correct measurements if you need them. I still use rivets as that is what I have and am use to. I also use the underserrated sections so I can sharpen them with a 4 inch grinder. These are great old mowers and will cut with modern mowers if in good condition. Parts such as belts and bar parts are still available from IH. Bearings can be had there or any good bearing supplier, they are common bearings. I haven't had any luck finding complete sickles at TSC or IH lately. The heads for them are available from IH

Just so you have the correct terminology when you're ordering parts, the name of "the little blades that rivet into the guards" are ledger plates. Also, at least around here anyway, the "knives" are commonly called "sickle sections".

I've got a mower just like yours and one of these days I'm gonna clean it up and mount it on my F-20, so I'll be following your posts to get an idea on current prices. Good luck and post pics when you get it done!

New 7' bar with all knife sections (Heavy) runs between about $80 and $130 for a IH 1300 sickle (same thing I'm pretty sure). You can get chrome/nickle plated sections but I've not heard of SSt. I replaced the drive shaft, it's bearings, and pulley for $200. There's a tool for replacing the knife sections without removing the bar you might consider. Georgeky is an expert on these things.

Three years ago I bought a IH 100 balanced head mower for 400 and then spent 250 replacing everything on the bar.

I bought this one for under $200 and it looks like I won't have to do much past cleaning it up. Was yours a rare model or something?

How much did you pay for a set of knives/blades and all of the attaching hardware????? ?

nothing rare about the balanced head mower. It just has no pitman and will operate in any up or down position. I wanted it for ditch and roadside. A complete knife will run you around 80 or 90 dollars at tractor supply for the 7' version. Just the sections with rivits or bolts is goin to be less. Those little bolts are geat things-you don,t have to remove knife to replace a section. I also replaced the old rock guards with conditioner guards and I replaced all the hold down clips, shims and bolts. I changed to conditioner guards because they have a narrower point and longer cuttin area. Good luck with your mower.
