Hello folks,
My IH 504 starts up great, everytime. However, the slightest load--and I mean just letting out the clutch very slowly, and the engine dies.
I have cleaned out the sediment bowl(small amount at bottom of bowl); pulled the bottom screw out of the carb bowl; checked for a good fuel flow...I don"t know where to go next. Someone mentioned putting points & condenser in.
If any of you have been here, please respond. Jim

I had a 72 Challenger that idled great but step on the gas and it would spit and sputter like crazy. I spent a lot on it,but in the end it was the coil wire for a $1.00.

Jim, this evening, after you return from Roadhouse, assuming you go/went there for auce bluegill, or like me-more than you can eat pizza, in the dark, check to see if you have good sparkie at plugs; coil, as Rusty suggested. I have a CA that wouldn't go under load and Thurman in Fairview found oil line plugged + bend rods, but luckily nothing broken. A few hundred $'s later it runs good. Yust my three cents worth - inflation ya know.

Hi Al,
I guess you know me now, and yes the pizzia at the Road House is mighty fine. Actually I'm a flatlander in Northern Illinois during the week and get up to a bluff property in Victory 2 or 3 weekends a month where the 504 is sitting. Having a bluff property is almost synonymous with needing a tractor and blade to keep up with the driveway up there, especially this year with all of the crazy rain patterns. I have already been through a couple of bent rods in cylinder #1. That was last year when I must have over rev'd the engine going down the steep grade in the wrong gear...This problem doesn't seem the same. Where is the repair place that you mentioned? I would like to take care of the problem myself, but it would be nice to have that contact info if I can't figure this out. Thanks, Jim

Jim in Victory, Wisconsin, welcome to America! We in the Badger State are good folks. To get to Thurman's, climb the hill out of Victory on County Trunk UU, inn Redmound turn left. Travel east past the 'cottonwood tree' don't ya know der den. Yust past the old 'Fargo Cheese Factory' don't ya know der den, turn right. Follow 27 to Fairview and the rural mail carrier/Fire Warden/operator of Fairview Repair is on the right - if you can't see all the MM's you should then immediately return to the flatlander country and seek help. He is around evenings and Saturday's. Vangen in the phonebook under Ferryville. I'm not going to give you his number, it it worth the scenic drive and visit. With another person, I have come within four pieces of eating a large pizza. Enjoy your stay in Wisc. and keep me/us posted. til lykke med dagen

Al,
Thanks for the directions. We'll have to meet up at the Roadhouse some weekend and get aquainted some. I'll let you know when I get the problem figured out. Until then, keep the sun at your back and your feet on good soil--You'll do fine.

Jim

Your main jet may be plugged with dirt. If your carburetor has the main jet adjusting screw, remove it and use some air pressure to blow it out. If this doen't help I would try another coil. Hal

Ignition problems can mimic fuel problems. I'm thinking your problem is directly related to a weak ignition coil.

Is there a good way to check for a weak ignition coil?

The best way to check it would be to install another coil that you know is good. Hal

My neighbor had a similar problem on a tiller with a Tecumseh engine. It would run at idle, had the carburetor apart several times still wouldn't throttle up. I pulled the plug wire off while it was running and it didn't have much fire.
The coil was the problem and after replacing the coil it had plenty of power. Hal

Mine does the same thing, especially when it's cold. Even after it's warmed up I have to pull the throttle back slowly.

It helped some when I went to electronic ignition. Half choked and higher rpm for the first five minutes or so makes it tolerable, but I haven't figured out why it stalls when you pull the throttle lever back too fast.

Does it run ok without any load? If it does could be something in the gear train. Hal

I don't mean to mislead you. I'm quite sure that transmission and gears are good. It simply won't run under any kind of load. Also as I increase the throttle from idle to say 1/3 throttle while standing still; the engine stumbles, so to me, it appears fuel related...
