8 foot Austin MFG. It has never cut worth anything since I got it (used). Sharpened several times, compared the RPM, gear box ratio to another that I have (single 5 ft) and when blade diameter is taken into account, both are 10,000 feet per minute tip speed (about same as found in eqmt catalogs). One cuts good, one poorly. The poor 8 foot has two rotating systems and now that I have checked and compared most things, I'm wondering that if it's earlier life, someone had it apart, swapped the gear boxes or something that would maybe cause the blades to rotate in opposite directions (yes the sharp edge hits the weeds first),but that is just flipping the blades over.)

As it stands now, the left rotates ccw & the right cw such that in the middle, it slings cuttings forward and on the outsides, it slings toward the rear. Anyone out there have a two head cutter and know directions of rotation or any other idea why this one cuts so much worse than the other? Should blade plane be level? The good one has a slight downward rake at the front, about 1 inch lower than the rear.

Should have a slight downward rake to it, like your good cutting one. mike

JD 1018 and HX19 mowers run that way. The blades run in opposite directions. Are the correct blades on the cutter that is not working well. They may not be providing any lift and knocking the weeds down.

Do you have a slip clutch that is not working? Or a shear pin out?

The slip clutch is rusted stuck & no shear pin problem. I have nothing to go on as far as the blades are concerned. They were on it when I got it and are simple sharpened flat piece of steel. Sharpened on both edges, probably intended to be flipped over so could go longer without re-sharpening or so could use on either ccw or cw spindle or both.
I think I know what you mean in that I have seen blades with some angle or curve to them.
In what I've been trying to cut this week, I don't
expect that 'lift' is a problem. 2 to 4 foot Goat weed with stems nearly as big as a pencil. Mostly knocking the smaller branches & leaves off & leaving a lot of stem with some leaves & small branches behind. Running wide open in 1st gear.
Compared to my 8N & 5 foot, I think it ought to cut better even in 2nd or 3rd.

I think the machine needs blades with the sharp edge on the side closest to the ground. the sharpness should be at an angle of 20degrees or so. I don't know if you can get them with a suction flip up on the back of the blade. JimN

Most mowers have the blades turning in the same direction, even three hub mowers. Maybe someone replaced a gearbox with a different one (just thinking outloud) JimN

May have the blades on the wrong side. There are left and right blades.
