Synthetic Oil ok for an M?

I am going to overhaul my M this fall. I use it to farm 160 acres and the last overhaul was in 1975--done alot of acres since then!

I would like to ask two questions:

1) is it ok to use synthetic motor oil in these engines, especially a "working girl" like my M?

and

2) Is it ok to use multi-viscosity (10W-30) in these engines? Or is single grade better?

BTW--I am in northeast Nebraska. It was dry in July but since Aug 1 we have had about 7 inches of rain. Temperatures have been in the upper 90"s and with the wet ground the humidity is beyond belief! It"s sweathog weather!

Have used synthetic in all my tractors and vehicles for the last few years since I could afford it. Never had a problem in thousands of miles and hundreds of hours.

Used dino SAE 30 CIH oil n my H for 20 hours or so of break-in and switched to Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 after that. I was changing it once a year while I was in ND and using the tractor more. Now it's every other year as it just doesn't get used much without me there.

I run Mobil1 in my vehicles for a minimum of 5000 miles, usually make it to 7500 miles if we are putting enough highway miles on. The Accord will burn about half a pint in 6000 miles and the Caravan probably a pint in 6000 miles. It works for me... third party image

I would highy recommend using synthetic oil. I use it in all my small engine, I get better compression, it helps un-stick any rings that get stuck and doesn't get as dirty as regular oil. Only problem about using synthetic is it is $$$$$$. But I highly recommend it. -David Goode Coggon, IA

Yes it's OK to use synthetic in them, and a multi-grade is OK as well. Words of caution! You mentioned overhaul this fall, and one thing you don't want to do is run the synthetic as a break-in oil. It's so slippery that it actually will prevent the rings from seating properly, so your break-in oil should be that good old dinosaur blood that we pump out of the ground. Once the motor is broken in you can switch to the synthetic.

Actually synthetic not "more slippery" then conventional (dino) oil.

However it is much more expensive and if you plan on changing it after a short break in period it would only make sense to use cheaper oil for that short period.

Synthetic has two features that make it superior to conventional oil, its ability to withstand high tempatures without breaking down and its ability to carry more contaminants allowing it to stay in the crank case longer. If your engine doesn't run that hot or if you are still planning on changing your oil every 200-250 or so hours you'd be money ahead using regular dino multigrade without compromising performance.
