I can add this much from the pictures: (1) It is a Farmall M; (2) It does not have a Mag because mags do not have a coil like that; and (3) it had Char-Lynn Power steering as shown in the pictures. I also believe it has a live hydraulic pump ahead of the distributor.

286644 means it's a 1951 tractor. X1 means it was configured to run on gasoline only (as opposed to kerosine or distillate)

Its a pretty simple engine, check ignition system including timing, fuel flow. valve adjustment, or a defective governor can make them slugish. also could have a tired engine with low compression. that could be checked also. As others have already posted its a 1951 model farmall M tractor. It has a distributor that is probably original. The hydraulic pump is the type that IH started using on some 1953 SM tractors. For some W series tractors the pump was avalible before that. Tractor has a charr lynn power steerig system added on with eaton pump. Tractor still has a IH manifold. Original engine should have a serial # 256644 X1

I looked on the engine block

FBKM 257644 X1 stamped on block next to coil...

6722 - DJ stamped up by spark plugs in raised letters

Is it an orignal engine?

Yes it would be the original engine. I figured wrong and got the one number off one.

may just need a tune up if its loosing power, could be dirt in the carburetor, fuel line restriction, maybe points and condenser. looking at the photo of the left side of the tractor, there does not seem to be a frame rail there, but some kind of hydraulic cylinder. also looks like someone put a power steering pump on it. can you post a few pictures of the tractor a little further away so we can see the whole tractor?

someone told me it was a 54' but I think that wrong :(

I havn't replace the points & condesor yet, if it continues too lose power under loads after I give tune up/check electical & check gas lines/flow, what should I check for next?

you will more than likely correct the problem with a good tune up and fuel system cleaning. whne the tractor starts acting up, check the spark to make sure its not getting weak, should be a good blue spark, jumping about 1/4 inch air gap. of it is getting weak, see if the coil is getting real hot, may be a weak ignition coil too. i had problems over the weekend with a couple tractors due to the high humidity we had. moisture in the distributor caps, also had to clean up some electrical connections too because of corrosion.

I>Link can't see the serial number, so I can't tell you a year, but that is a Farmall M.
It could have a magneto or a distributer.

That is a Farmall M with an IH distributor and just ahead of the distributor is a live hydraulic pump. The pump is NOT original to the tractor, and the M would have originally been equipped with a magneto. Both the pump and the distributor are aftermarket up-grades.

George, I think you are right. If I remember correctly, a mag was standard from the factory up untill 1946 or 47. After that a distributer was standard.

My 50 M came with a distributor when bought new by an uncle, but the 50 Cub that gramps bought new came with a mag. I have some others, but don't know what they had when new.

yes, that is an original McCormick number 30 or 31 power loader built by IH for that tractor.
