Hey guys. Well I got the screen/plug replaced in the orifice of the pressure reuglator block on my 300 row crop and it stopped the problem for about 20 minutes and now the pump is bogging down the engine alot again and getting very very hot again. It acts like that screen has collapsed upon itself again or I have other problems. Anybody know what would be causing that screen to collapse? I played with the lever and switched the valves back and fourth from double to single and back to double acting to make sure that none of them were stuck in betweeen. It also makes no difference if I leave it in the double or single acting position while running the tractor. The engine is still bogged down and the pump still gets hot. I have hooked an implement to both sets of front outlets and the rear outlet and they run the hydraulics on the implement as they should. I have changed the oil again and checked the screen in the reservior and it is still not clogged/plugged or blocked as far as I can tell. Any other things I can check? Thank you for all your help. Matt

Matt, I think Jim is probably right on this one. Something would have to be collapsing that screen. Since it worked right for a while it is very likely.

Screens collapse from external pressure. The pressure comes from one of two sources, either the flow rate through the screen is 400% of normal (no way) or there is trash/particles on the outside of the screen plugging it up and causing even a modest flow to collapse it. I would bet there is something getting into the screen. It may even fall off when the system is torn down and not be obvious. Good luck, JimN

Matt, does it have power steering on it?

No. The previous owner cobbled it on and then took it off before I bought it. The hole that he drilled and tapped (tapped crookedly) in the juction block for the main lines on the bottom side of the pump had been plugged. As it was on the pressure side of the block, hydraulic oil was spraying out around the plug throught the threads. A good frind of mine that has a welding/machine shop put a 45 degree chamfer on the inside of the hole in the block and on the outside of the plug, threaded the plug into the block, and then silver soldered it in place (obviously I took the assembly off the tractor and into his shop and made sure it was clean/free of debree before re-installing)so it would stop leaking. The plug is the same thickness as the side of the juction block so it should not be restricting the flow from the pump at all.

Matt, all I can think of is the regulator piston may be sticking. Is the bore and piston in good shape without nicks or burrs on them? Maybe someone else may have other ideas.

When I had the reulator apart to replace the screen/plug I went ahead and pulled everything else out that I could easily get out out. The large piston appeared to be in good shape but I did not take out the seat and check the ball/spring underneath. However I was able to push the ball down and it popped right back up as it should have. The smaller piston under the large spring and retainer also looked fine to me. I marked the regulator block cover before I took it off so I know the passages inside are back in the correct positions. I am just not sure what to check for. I would think that if something was stuck, it would have continued to bog the engine down immediately after I replaced the screen/plug. As it took about 20 minutes for it to start doing it again, I beleive that the screen has collapsed again but I have no idea why or what I should look for now. Thanks for your help though...

It may have just stuck after your 20 minute run time. If there is a rough spot in the bore it could be doing this. It almost has to be in that regulator valve somewhere. You might check the saftey valve, as if it is stuck it could build to much pressure and cause the orifice screen to collapse.
