An elderly relative saw my 2 restored Cases and offered me his 1939 F-30 for free. Good news--- It’s been stored inside for 35 years, tires are up and decent-looking, Front and rear wheels are round-spoked and rims are good---old tractor is pretty straight all over. Bad news--- engine is apart, sleeves out and hanging on the gearshift and belt pulley levers. I couldn’t see, but I can’t imagine that the crankshaft is usable after being exposed all these years.

1. Are complete rebuild kits available with new sleeves/pistons, and if so, does anybody have an idea as to how much these cost? I have a feeling I could get in pretty deep on a “free” tractor.

2. I know there weren’t anywhere near as many F-30s made as there were F-20s--- is a decently restored F-30 worth much more than decently restored F-20?

Glenn All the parts you need are out there somewhere and your feeling about getting in too deep on a free tractor is warranted if you insist on new parts However an F30 will be worth half again as much as an F20 and they are a real forgiving engine. If its not going to be asked to work much any part thatss not broken will most likely do.

No need for an expensive rebuild kit. If it was inside, you should be able to hone the cyclinders, buy new rings from Rice Equipment (814) 226-9200, have the head re-ground and put her back together. The F-30 like the F-20 is a rather simple tractor. If you have any problems, post here and you will get plenty of good advice. Good Luck

I think you will probably be okay cleaning up that crank. Being apart is sure better than together and stuck. Good luck and i think you are fortunate, enjoy the f-30. Lots of power on those.

That tranny & rear end must be bullet proof. Back in the mid-70's, there used to be a guy from Nebraska that came up to SD for the hot rod tractor pull our Jaycee chapter had on the 4th of July-he had an F-30 w/440 Chrysler engine in it. It never seemed to bother that old F-30's rear gears that all that HP was in front of it. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

You guys saw right. There were many that pulled hot rod back then. Even multiple engines, those trans and rears were bulletproof.

I know a guy here in KY that had one with a 383 in it. Some how he had a 2 speed power glide tranny rigged between it and the tractor tranny. While back I saw a 44 MH with a 4 cylinder GM engine and a bull dog tranny in it. That thing would run 50 MPH and had a 4 speed PTO. I wish I had bought it, he just wanted 500 for it and other than that engine rigging it was a nice 44.
