Two weeks ago the Texas floods put our back 80 (our only 80) under one to five feet of water. Only the bermuda grass and some ragweed survived immersion for this long.
Today was the first day the soil dried out enough to disc in the rotted vegetation that was left. This was the first real work for the "new" 656. After approximately 1 hour it just quit, like I switched off the key. I let it rest for about a minute and it started right back up. After about 5-10 more minutes it quit again. This time when I cranked it would not refire. Up until this event the tractor has always started instantly for me.

Since I want to finish discing while the ground moisture is right I'm OK with shotgun style responses (i.e. throwing parts at it)... but which parts? I'm guessing electrical but my history of diagnosing stuff is not that great. Last weekend I pulled and cleaned sparked plugs and checked plug gap and did a simple engine compression test.

Only other clues I have that may or may not be related
#1) After being fine for several weeks the battery was drawn down last week.

#2) Today, after about 1/2 hour of pulling the disc the engine would miss for about a minute then it would instantly smooth out for a period of time.

I'm going to go to the Case/IH house in the morning to get condensor, coil, cap and rotors based on a recent post about a 1949 H. I haven't owned anything with points since my 1970 Olds but I don't ever remember points causing something like this?

Thank you for all the advice so far. Didn't get home until way after dark. Tomorrow evening I will start checking all that was suggested and post back with what I find.

If its not gas or spark make sure it isnt overheating. And the carb isnt set to rich (is the exhaust smokey and smell of fuel?) A rich carb will start ok cold, even warm engine but hot it wont run right at all.

Pull the coil wire from the distributor cap and hold it within 1/8-1/4" of good ground on the tractor while someone makes an attempt to start the tractor. If you have good hot spark from the coil wire reconnect to cap and pull off one the plug wires and check there for fire. If there's fire there at the plugs. You probably have a fuel problem. Don't be jerking parts off and replacing them until you find the problem. Hal

The problem could be caused by a defective fuel shut off solenoid on the carb. With the switch on, unplug and then reconnect the solenoid at the carb. You should hear it click each time you make and break the circut. If you have your hand on it you should be able to feel it also.

First place to start is check to see if it has a good spark. Then check to make sure it has a good flow of gas by removeing the drain plug from the bottom of the carb. Then go from there. No spark it could be a bad condenser and or points or even a bad rotor. I've had more then one rotor go bad and when they do its a no go with the engine.Never throw parts at a problem till you find what the problem is because you can be adding more troubles to it before you find the problem

Have you checked to see if you are getting plenty of gas? If not start there. You may have a blockage or carb problem. Take the fuel line loose at the carb and see if you are getting gas there, if not the line and or tank is full of junk. If good flow pull the drain plug from carb and see if a good stream runs out of it for a couple of minutes. If not clean and service carb. This doesn't cost anything to check but as little time.
