Cub/CubLoBoy? Clutch grind oil drip

Posted a few days ago about a cub clutch that would grind if pushed too far. Shifted good if pushed in just a little. Thanks to the experts here my friend and I decided fixing would not be a major deal (new throw out bearing at worst). So last evening we went to load it and she noticed oil dripping from the flange behind the engine, and also from the clutch adjustment cover. This happened when the tractor was inclined on my loading ramps, face down (ie I was backing it up on).

Noticed oil stains on the mower deck so this is not a recent thing. It was dripping pretty fast, and continued when we lowered it back off the trailer. Looks to me like a rear main seal is shot. Is this reasonable, and if so, what’s involved to fix it. If not, what else could it be? Told the seller we’ll get back to him. He lowered the price $300 but I said we’ll think things over.

Noticed another thing also. The serial # is 245###, which correlates to a 1974 cub, not a low boy. Any ideas what’s the story here?

Looks to me like someone installed a cub engine on a loboy frame and messed up the clutch and rear main seal. Oh well, too bad.

I'm a real Cub fan but for the prices you are quoting and the condition of each, I think I would be looking at the 140.

Allright. I'm learning. Somebody put a newer cub engine in an offset loboy frame and messed up the clutch and the front transmission seal.

So which is a better mower for the bucks: Offset loyboy (bad throwout bear and front xmission seal) with 42" belley mower for 18 big ones, or a nice 140 with a 4' woods rear mower for 7 more (maybe less)?

Unclear what you have. Go to the ATIS Cub FAQ (follow the link) and use the pictures to determine what model you have. The serial number is not attached to the engine so engine swaps shouldn't mess that up. The Farmall and offset Lo-Boy numbers are attached to the front bolsters, which do get replaced. So maybe that is the problem.

Is the leaking oil transmission oil? On the offset models, it is not unusual for the front transmission seal to leak oil which collects in the rear of the bell housing. When the tractor is tipped forward (as when loading) the oil can run forward and out the openings at the front of the housing. It is not expensive or difficult to fix, but requires splitting the tractor at the rear of the bell housing. $300 is a substantial discount for this problem.

Thanks for the responses.

Defintely a Loboy frame so the at least the bolsters are from a cub.

Looked like engine oil. Makes more sense if it were xmission fuid as the front was tilted down. It was honey color and appeared to have engine oiil viscosity. Can the engine and transmission seals be changed while the throwout bearing is replaced? (ie does it make sense to split and replace all those things?

Guy wanted $2200 and is now down to $1800. Mainly looking for a mower here and I might be able to get a 140 & mower in great shape for about $2500 that doesn't need all the fixing.

I don't know.

Offset Loboy or 154/185/184 Loboy?

If it looks like a regular Cub except squashed to the ground, it"s an offset Loboy. Then if you"re pulling the serial number off the front bolsteR (not plural), then that was removed from a newer Cub.

Now, if you"re getting oil when the tractor is on the ramp nose-down, it is NOT the rear engine seal. It is the front seal on the transmission.

Engine would be the same but the clutch would be different between a Cub and a 154 loboy. Rear main seal should be the same.
