Hi everyone-again, i posted the below post the other day, and am about to drive over to my dad's and try what was suggested. However, I just had a thought so I wanted to ask before I went over to his house. ---Are there any "safety ignition switches" on a 1974 cub that could be responsible for what is happening?---
thanks, david

Hi everyone,
I searched past posts and followed past advice but have still not had success with this problem.
My dad was drving his cub to the barn after cutting grass, and went to shift to 3rd gear and the tractor died out, and would not crank again. We checked, there was no spark at plugs, pulled the dist. points were pitted. We replaced points, replaced condenser, tested the coil(OK), tested voltage at + side of coil with key on(have 12v-OK, cleaned/checked connections, dist. shaft is turning, reassembled. Still no spark. Could there be something grounding in the distributor area? There is a little play in the shaft, if this is worn can it ground out something? Please help, thanks, da

Probably one of the safety switches. Which one and where is going to depend on the model of Cub and serial number Dad owns. In addition to those listed by Old. PTO safety switch.

I don't know that machine but I know almost all mowers from around 1967 up do have safety switches on them and if just one goes bad they will not run So yes you need to look at them to see if thats the problem. I know one we have has 3 of them. One if the clutch brake and it will not start with out the pedel down, 2 is in the deck area and 3 is the seat switch. Not sure if that cub would have any or all of them but most likely it does have one or more

Clean those new points with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and then see if the engine will start.
Pull the coil wire from the cap and hold the end of the coil wire near a good ground and have someone to snap those points open and close a few times with the ignition switch on. Every time the points are snapped you should have fire from the coil wire. Hal
