My son's 300u really makes a racket when running, sounds like its comming from flywheel, clutch area. We took the inspection plate off. The shaft to the transmission has a lot of play in it. The clutch plate center splines are staying in place on the transmission shaft, but the shaft can be moved quite a bit and makes a noise. When turning the transmission shaft back and forth the clutch plate does not move, but there is still a lot of play in it. Hope this makes sense to you.
Could it be that some of the springs on the clutch disc are broken and causing this?
What kind of thoughts or suggestions do any of you guys have?

There is not any feelable play rotationally. If there is it is split time, sorry. I would replace the disk with a ceramic or simi metalic puck disk,(a bit more harsh, but more holding power and life. You may need a new shaft, and pilot bearing as well, as they might be the original cause of the grief. JimN
