How full should the upper radiator tank remain on a McCormick Deering 10-20? I filled my real full, but it keeps seems the overflow allow it to drain down to may 2 inches or so over the radiator fins. Seems like a lot of empty upper tank. Maybe the overflow pipe should be sticking up inside the upper tank --- and has broken off? I don't see anything that looks like an overflow inside the tank, but see it on the back of the outside when looking under the hood.

Two inches of free coolant over the fins is fine. The return is up high and so you need to make sure there is free coolant that way you know the hot coolant is returning and not leaking or boiling away. When I first started running both my 10-20 and 15-30 I used to think they were running to hot but they seem to run better hot. I rarely have reason to run one or the other for more than 1 hour at any one time and that may factor in.

I just happen to be in the process of tearing apart, cleaning and putting new gaskets on my radiator for my F-20 which I believe is the same as what you have. The overflow tube was 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the top. I had to utterly destroy it to get it out of there, unfortunate but it had already been damaged anyway.

The radiator core is the same for F-20 but the tanks are different. If the guy who bought my 10-20 stops by I will have him measure the tube or look it up in the parts book I gave him with the tractor.

I'm going to look again this afternoon to see if I can find the overflow on the inside of the tank. Would be great to know how high it should go, if the fellow stops by. Take care, Dan

Yes there is supposed to be an over flow tube that sticks up from the bottom. I don't have my parts book anymore , but it gave the measurments and pipe size you need to make one! I used galvanized 1/4" pipe threaded on one side only as original. Seems to me it might have been 5 1/2 inch long. but I think it left about 2-3 inches to the top of the tank for expansion. One thing to make sure of until you get it the tube in is, for the Thermosyphon to work and not cook the head is the upper inlet must be underwater in the tank. If it isn't, it can't flow until the head gets so hot it boils it out...not good!
