What"s a fair price for a 656 diesel hydro with 6300 hours and 30 percent left on the rears?

Tractor has an IH wide front and good flat top fenders. Paint is so-so.

Seller is asking $6500. Seems a little high.

Yeah, it seems a little high and those old 656 hydros scare me to death.

However, if in good shape and you need a tractor for loader work, they are unquestionably the best there is. Just add rear wheel weights and go.

Cheap horsepower.

So, it boils down to what you want it for and it's your call. Price a new one and you'll bleed from the ears. :>)

I was thinking of putting the loader on her. What is so scary about them? Is it that the tractor is 41 years old? Are 656"s bad tractors? Or is it that the hydros are problematic? Would I be better off just buying a conventional tractor and be done with it? Also, what"s a beast like this worth? 4k? 5k?

In the early 656 Hydros, there were some items in the transmission which were made of a different material and tended to flake off over time and caused some problems.

However, don't let me scare you off.

If it moves, is good and solid, if that engine is okay, it most certainly is worth the $6500 if you need a good loader tractor.
