I am looking at a IH674 and would like more info on this tractor. How much $ with a loader. How reliable are these tractors, parts availability. Things I should look for, etc. I am selling off all my hay equipment and just need something to brush hog with and small farm jobs. Anything you have to offer would be helpful.

One of the items I was notified about also on these tractors (and can confirm with the one I bought), check out the front end for wander going down the road, especially one that has had some front end loader usage. I had to replace the tie rods and bushings in the front axle to get my unit to go straight.

I paid $7300 for my 784 with 2250 Mount-O-Matic loader, both of which needed a lot of TLC as they sat out in the weather for some time. At least the parking brake wasn't fried but the cable/center moving wire were basically rusted fast. Had to did-assemble, lube and put back. The brake holds very well on an incline. Nice tractor now for function - maybe not so much yet for looks.

Hi Rich, we owned a 674D for a few months and traded for a newer model 684 with T/A. There was nothing wrong with the 674 but it had the slow speed transmission without T/A and for our JD forage chopper 2nd gear was to slow and 3rd gear was to fast. 684 is a newer model but it had faster transmission and 2nd gear was just right and T/A for heavy spots. My brother still has 684 and it has almost 7000 Hrs on it. The D239 German built Diesel is a very good engine and it is used in a few other models like 544. 674 is about 62 PTO HP. The everything from the clutch housing back is common to 454,464,484,574,584,684,784,884.

Weakest point is the parking brake. Usually the parking brake warning lamp on the dash burns out then someone drives the tractor with the parking brake engaged and the brake band in the transmission gets chewed to bits and the bits get into the hydraulic system and the bits clog filters and MCV valve ports.

So check to see if parking brake will hold tractor on an incline. The other thing is if it has T/A. The T/A should not free wheel on a downward slop in Lo on this model.

Don't know price of 674 but good 684s were going for near $10,000 CND.

Good luck
JimB
