Both my 400"s "hiss" when the pto is placed in the off position. One Hiss"s so annoyingly that I keep it on all the time....kind of a bad practice. What causing this? Can it be stopped? Almost sounds like hydraulics going over relief.

Make sure it has oil in it, it does NOT share with the rear end, it has it's own. The level plug is on the left side, usually hidden by the FH cylinder. Some whine is normal, it gets worse fast if it is dry. When you turn the pto off the planet gears must spin, that is what you are hearing.

I am going to flush out the oil and change it. tractor has been sitting for the last 15 years or so and that is the only oil i haven"t touched.

We have been listening to this sound for 52 years on our 300 farmall. It is normal , If you have a seasonal diconnect you can completely shut it off no more noise.

My 300 that I am restoring does the same thing. The older mechanic that I use has seen this alot and says it is just how they are. He said there is nothing wrong with it. He advised to just leave it on all the time unless I need it off. When on, he says that the oil circulates better which in turn is better for the PTO unit.

Hissing may be dragging Bands, or worn out bands. Also lack of lube could make it noisy. Adjust the bands by the book, check the lube and listen with a stethescope for location of noise. They are very quiet if set correctly. There may be adjustment advice on the Search For box above. JimN
