This is a gas tractor. The tractors will not turn over, the solinoid just chatters then buzzes. How do I check to see if I have a defective solinoid or starter. the battery is old and in maintenence free. What should the battery read? With my Voltmeter should I get a reading at the cranking motor when I turn the key? It worked great(the tractor) until the other day.
Thanks

I am not being rude, This is what you asked for in your first post on Page 2. so I will re-insert it here. A battery not under load will read 12+ volts. The measurement needed is the volts when cranking/trying to crank. Connect a volt meter to the posts of the battery (not the clamps) and (in neutral with brakes set) have someone crank it. If the voltage stays pretty high, there is a connection problem, or starter problem. If the voltage drops to 7-8 volts the battery is either not charged, or toast. If it stays high try measuring between the starter input terminal (starter moter side of solenoid) and good ground. If the voltage is low there (6-8volts) the issue is in the battery cables or ground connection. OOOrrr the starter is stuck or shorted. Loosen the starter at its mounting bolts and wiggle it. then tighten the bolts. If it starts then, it probably needs a starter drive. I will add that if you pull the starter out and plase it in a vice on the outside of its body, not a mounting ear, and test it with jumper cables directly from a good battery, It will snap up to speed with a violent jerk of rotation, and sparks will come from the cable where it is used to touch the terminal on the starter. (do not allow sparks at the jumper battery). If it does not spin up with authority it needs to be fixed. In this post you indicate an old battery. My guess is that it is the problem. Best of luck, JimN

Hi Jim,
I just got back to my tractor today and wanted to ask a few questions. I am going out to buy a new solenoid today,I bought a new battery yesterday and The solenoid still buzzes. So I am assuming that it is no longer working. I will install this later today and I hope this works. If I still get a "buzzing" at the solenoid what would be my next step? The starter. I just re-read your post about taking it off and bench testing it. I will try that also if the new solenoid does not work.
One question. I am checking to see if there power going to the cranking motor with a probr light. I have power at the solenoid, at batt. and cable running from solenoid to batt. BUT, I do not get a power indication at cranking motor post. This is why I think it is the solenoid. What is the best way bypass solenoid to check starter?
Thanks,
Paul

Take that battery and have it load tested. I never liked those maintenance free batteries. You can not tell if the battery electrolyte is low
in one of the battery's cell's. Have you tried
to hand crank the engine to make sure it isn't stuck? Cold weather will affect your battery's performance too. It needs to be fully charged or it will freeze. It helps the battery if you have a block heater on your engine to preheat the engine. It will take less cranking amps when the engine is warm. You need good battery cables too, if they're cracked replace them. Hal

I just took off the solinoid and when I shake it, it sounds like there are loose particles inside. Is this normal? How can I check to see if this solinoid is still working?
Thanks

I have never replaced a solenoid. Someone else that post on this forum may have had a problem.
The only problem I had with solenoid's were corroded cable connections. That corrosion will act like an insulator. Take a look at new one and give it a good shaking that may be normal. One other thing I had with them were the brass
discs inside the solenoid from all that arcing when you make a start. I just rotated them so they had a new area to arc on. It was usually very hard to do this on cars since you have very little room to work. I would pull the starter and sometimes I would just buy a rebuilt starter.
Hal
PS: Have you tried another good battery? I use the best batteries from Walmart that have the 3 year free replacement. They are about $70.00
with an exchange. I even have one on my garden tractor and its about 5 years old.
