Has anyone tried either of the two HF auto-darkening helmets? They offer a black model and a blue flame model, each with slight differences in specs. For the hobbiest/occasional stick welding application.

I get more flash when stick welding before I get the window down. I am thinking of one of them automatics.

I bought a Western Safety brand auto-adjusting helmet from Harbor Freight about a year ago - at the recommendation of my friend, who has a welding/racecar/machine shop here. He has been using one for 10 years. Supposedly, it is an $80 helmet, but it was on sale for $39.95. It is great; I have never burned my eyes and never regretted buying it. Let me say this: Both he and I mostly "tig" weld. mike

Used an auto darking helmet for ten of the 14 years I worked in a weld shop.

The flash I got on the early ones, which were slow, was far less flash then I got trying to flip down the helmet or lens on a manual helmet.

As far as the lens themselves they are the same or better than a manual helmet.

All of them built today are fast enough that you get no flash.

You get more of a flash when you look up at the sun.

Yes in the 14 years I burnt my eyes 2 times.

Once was from the reflection off of aluminum pickup topper I was welding the came from my back side and reflected off the inside of my lens.

The other was with a manual helmet doing a bunch of spot welding and not getting the helmut down quick enough.

If I went back to welding 8 hours a days 5 days a week I would take a auto dark of any company before I would go back to a manual.

Just my veiw Gary

My eyes are worth a lot of money to me. The cheap HF helmets may "work" fine, but the amount of UV rays that can get through the lense is what would scare me. I am pretty cheap, and I thought I was pushing the limit of safety when I only spent $179.00 on a Miller helmet. But, you are the one who knows what you eyes are worth to you.

Welp, you've committed the sin of mentioning the words "Harbor Freight" in conjunction with any tool. As soon as you do that, whatever it is is junk in many people's eyes.

I would not trust my eyes to any autodarkening helmets. They have a response time, allbeit however short, is still damaging your eyes little by little. It is not worth it. I think a helmet with a voice activated darkening (not a voice atrivated lightening, because it could be triggered accidentaly, a manual lightening would be best), would be cool. But I'm paranoid and cheap.

I have one and my dad has one. He has had his for a couple of years with no problems. Chances are those high priced ones have the same components in them. Ours are the black ones.

I would not trust my only set of eyes to a cheap auto-darkening shield....
