C-123 engine applications and serial numbers

Was the C-123 engine the same in the Super C, the F-140 and the F-240 ? Did the engine serial numbers run from 500 through 200,000 (or so) or did each tractor have it's own engine serial numbers ?

I'm checking the parts for my '53 Super C and am finding several specifications, none of which are close to what I've got. The cam lobe lift and valve spring length numbers from the I&T for the C are the closest.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg

Greg,
If original, your engine block should have a casting number of 354898R1/2 and will not have the C-123 designator on it. That didn't start until the R3 blocks with the 100/200 series tractors because the same blocks were used to create 113 and 123 engines in '51-'54. Before the 100/200 tractors the serial number either matched the tractor as in early A/Bs or was close but higher as in the Super series. They started again with C123-501 for the 100/200. I believe the splits were about C123-36000 for the x30 series, and C123-65000 for the x40 series with a new block casting number at each split. Expect the x40 series specs to be a little different as the heads were changed for both the x30/x40 tractors to have larger valves and a more shallow combustion chamber which made the valves longer as well. You will find several threads in the archives with details along this line and interchangeability of parts, or if you are looking for something specific, ask and we will try to help out.

I've had a Farmall for 20 plus yrs sitting in my barn and never tried to find out what it was until this week when I found this site. It has been pickled but started up with some gas and a short pull. I'm trying to verify if it is a 1955 Model 200. The engine is embossed C123 and 354898. As well engine is stamped 11347. The plate on the clutch housing is 5900 J. The grill has two vertical full length openings below the IH chrome badge. On either side is a pattern of horizontal openings layed out, two space six space six and space two, which I understand was the pattern after 1954. Any info is appreciated. THx Dave

Dave,
everything you described would be correct for a 200. The block would have been 354898R3, serial num is correct for the year, and description of sheetmetal is correct for 200/230 tractors. The 200 should have the rockshaft arms sticking out each side under the gas tank like the Super C, as opposed to the 230 with the hydra-touch hydraulics. You should have 200 badges on the hood. You can look over on the left and search in the tractor photos section for a farmall super c, 200, and 230 to see the sequence.

Thx Stan. This is a great site. It was sold to me as a "C" not that it matters much now. Hope I don't go into a trance and spend a million bucks refurbing this sweet 200. It does have the rockshaft arms. The badges are missing, just the mounting holes are there. Maybe I can find a set on this forum. Thx again Dave

That explains a lot. The block is the 354898R2 casting. I'll have to poke around in the archives. Thanks Stan.

Your engine could be a C113 out of a strait c or it could be C135 out of a 240 or mabey 404
