What year did the Farmall H have a distributor instead of a magneto? My 47 model has a distributor and it is the vertical type. I have noticed some that are horizontial. Is mine an after market of some type?

I believe that IH switched over to distributors from magneto ignition sometime in the middle of 1949.I may be wrong about this.

Gary:
Others may know more and I stand to be corrected. However, I think the battery ignition became standard in 1949. But, you could still order magneto ignitions after that, although they would have been an option. So a magneto would have been quite common in 1947. It is my understanding the vertical distributor was a delco-remy (GM) aftermarket add-on. It gets good reviews and parts are readily available.

Your tractor would have had a mag on it when new.Delco-Remy offered replacement distributor drives to replace the mag.It stands uprightas opposed to laying flat like the IH distributor does.My 46 M has the same distributor on it as your H,THE MAG WAS DISCARDED LONG AGO.

If its still there, the Delco tag should be on it.

Back in the day, everyone discarded the mag when it started to give trouble in favor of one of these distributors, now everyone is discarding the points and condenser in favor of a Pertronix electronic unit.
