Find myself a 49 H. The engine is not stuck and the over all condition is good. But, the previous owner put a 12v alternator on it. the battery is missing so, how should I hook the thing up. Hot lead to the starter and ground to the case? For the life of me I can't remember I'm thinking the pos went to the block.

Sam, like Alan told ya nearly alllll lllll ll alternatoes UNLESS it was special made which is rare, are for negative ground so wire the battery n starter accordingly. When a tractor with an ammeter has its polarity reversed its leads need swapped or else it would read bass ackwards ya know and also on battery powered coil ignitions their polarity should match battery polarity i.e. if youre at negative gorund the coils + terminal is fed from the ignition switch and its other lil - terminal is what wires to the distributor. The starter still turns the same direction regardless.

Hot lead up to the starter switch; negative to a starter mounting bolt.

12-volt is gonna be negative grd.
