Hey, got a 656 gas that fouls plugs pretty good. What plugs should I use? Also, have been told it needs new main bearing seals (has for a while) as it leaks oil out around the crank (been told this by IH mechanic). Question, what would be causing the excessive oil burning, rings? Or main bearings? Also, what all is entailed in getting this tractor fixed, do I need to split the tractor, or can it be overhauled in-frame? Its one of our favorites here and we don't really have that much money to put into it and have neither hoist nor engine stand to do it on. Are we crazy to try? Its just so darn expensive to have someone else do it. ANY help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

You could possibly rent an engine hoist and stand. Removed an engine from a 300 with old loader but rented an engine hoist to install.

Mike,

That's the trouble with gas tractors. They just don't last and need to be rebuilt at every 5,000 hours. It is the nature of the beast.

Take 'er out and do it right. I know, lots of money. But, if you don't it will just keep getting worse and worse.

Then, screw in a set of D-21 Champion plugs.

Mike. I had a B F Avery w/ one front wheel that smoked like a tar kettle and leaked like a strainer. Cut the wires to the plugs and put a shirt button inline, Don't know how it works but had no more plug problems. Checked the oil every time it was cranked. run it for ten years that way. My boy didn't check the oil one day and the rest is history. True story. If I were you I'd fix it right. David

Well if it is that bad then she need to COME out and get a total rebuild and yes it will cost a few sheckels but it is like this when done it will run for many years with reasonable care.
